Latchis Hotel

What a great historic hotel, nestled in the downtown of Brattleboro and not even a block from the Amtrak station. Quiet rooms, friendly staff and parking adjacent to the building at no fee at no fee. Be sure to see what scheduled with the theater that’s part of the hotel. You can smell the popcorn as you walk the stairs to your room or ride elevator.

I spent three days visiting Brattleboro, Vermont and its environs with four nights at the Latchis Hotel. The hotel is a throwback to the 1930’s so the rooms are modest (at least mine was) but affordable. One of the key advantages is that the hotel is in the center of town and I was able to take an Amtrak train (from Maryland!) which left me off only two blocks from the hotel. Consequently I didn’t need a car and was spared a long drive though the train ride was long. Brattleboro is an interesting mix of socially conscious businesses, cute New England shops, a microcosm of small town America that has withered away in most of the rest of the country with an Olympic ski jump mixed in as a conversation starter. I visited during the week in August (M—W) and while a lot of businesses are only open Thursday through Sunday, there was a remarkable vitality to the town during the day. Like any town in the Northeast US, there are some warts. Some shuttered storefronts, folks on the margins and suggestions of challenges with substance abuse, Brattleboro also displays a remarkable tolerance and compassion. It knows who it is and is passionate about preserving social equity, inclusion and the character that has sustained it over more than two centuries. I find Brattleboro and Vermont remarkable in their authenticity and intentionality that is seldom found in our country and I hope I am able to return soon for a longer stay.

The clerk was super nice and informative

Location was terrible. We could hear every noise outside our room. Doors closing, the walk sign, vehicles and unfortunately for us the overnight construction that was happening on the street outside our window. The advertised king size bed was really a king size mattress propped on two metal cots- if you sat on the Shea you’d slide right off. The TV didn’t work properly at all.

Excellent location! Clean and good parking. Could have better lighting for reading in room.

There was no breakfast, but the Hotel and Theater were both wonderful. We like old, as long as it is kept up. Latchis is beautifully managed, and the staff was terrific.

Wish our room had more antiques rather than modern, but the staff plans to put the older items on a select floor.

Really cool historic hotel with lots of history. It was like staying in a museum. The room was clean and they provided a fan for comfort. We especially enjoyed playing records on the player provided. It’s within walking distance to restaurants, shops and breweries. We’d stay there again!

We had a nice view, but the windows were filthy and we couldn’t even see out of one.

Staff were friendly and efficient and went out of their way to help me in a difficult situation at a local restaurant!! Very compassionate and supportive through my ordeal!! I will definitely stay again when in Brattleboro!
