Quintinha Sao Joao Hotel & Spa

We were happy to return to Quintinha São João at the end of April. This is our third visit with a small group of clients to the beautiful island of Madeira, Portugal. Located in the colorful capitol city of Funchal, we have consistently found Q.S.J. to be a relaxing respite tucked into a very busy city. The unique appeal of this property is their commitment to a 1950's design esthetic accompanied by the quiet presence of top notch service. The front desk has a revolving cast of excellent individuals however we most frequently (and happily) work with Maria and Katerina. Any questions about Madeira travels ?...they are well versed in making multiple reservations or additional touring advice. Fastidiously maintained, my favorite room is the bar ... seemingly lifted from an episode of Masterpiece Theater's "Inspector Lewis," you will love it! Antonio is our 'go to person" here. In addition to being very proud native of Madeira, we appreciate his expertise in arranging a personalized Madeira tasting. Parking (reserve in advance) is "snugly" available on the lower level. Because of its micro-size we encourage you not to arrive in a large car--actually wise advice for anywhere on the island. Another major plus is the restaurant, open 7 days per week. Given the opportunities for driving adventures on Madira SOMETIMES it is lovely to relax around the pool and stroll to dinner steps from your room. Philippe and his staff are the "stars" here....his quiet and superior approach to service is hard to miss. Quintinha São João is the only sensible choice if you are looking for complete relaxation with a superbly trained staff. Thank you all again.

A charming hotel with excellent staff and services. It's not in my opinion 5 star in all respects but a good 4. Breakfast was excellent, we were b and b, and the location was close enough to walk in and out of central Funchal. The only problem for us was the constant dog barking day and night from a nearby garden. Really spoilt our stay so we would not ve a returnee.

Spotlessly clean rooms and lovely bed linen. Very helpful staff and a nice ambiance overall. The only criticism we have is breakfast. It is very awkward and sometimes dangerous to facilitate getting breakfast holding plates/cups/drinks when other residents are coming and going through the corridor where the food is laid out. We really think that this needs re-thinking in terms of its layout. Otherwise a very enjoyable stay and would definitely stay again.

A very charming hotel with extremely helpful and friendly staff that attended to our every need. Our room was spacious and featured a good-sized balcony overlooking the attractive gardens. The breakfasts had a good variety of both hot and cold dishes, and the a la carte evening meals were very tasty and reasonably priced. The indoor and outdoor pools were well-kept, and the spa facilities were a treat. We were grateful for the shuttle bus to the Marina on days that we preferred not to make the 20-minute walk down to the centre of Funchal. We would very happily stay at the Quintinha Sao Joao Hotel & Spa again next time we visit Funchal.

Excellent facilities, friendly staff and good food. We had a 5 night stay and would highly recommend.

Broken air-conditioning. Towels not refreshed when requested.

The whole ambience was lovely, it had the feel of a high end hotel but with a much more personal feel. The room was spotless and much larger than we thought, the staff were excellent and couldn’t do enough for you. The food in the restaurant was very good and very reasonably priced.

The indoor pool was a little tired but perfectly useable, but I’m just picking at straws here. There was nothing to dislike about the place

I loved the location, the views were beautiful. And although up a hill, only a 10 minute walk to the harbour. The staff were absolutely fantastic. And If you don't want to or can't make it walking, they had a shuttle bus that ran monday-friday into town as well. Had food in the restaurant one night too and it was delicious, as was breakfast. There's even a games room for the event of rain!! Absolutely amazing holiday. :)

From the moment we arrived, everything was perfect. The staff were genuinely warm, welcoming, and attentive – they made us feel completely at home. Our room was spacious and beautifully maintained, with a stunning balcony that looked out over the lush gardens and offered breathtaking views across Funchal. Every detail, from the peaceful surroundings to the thoughtful touches in the room, added to the overall sense of calm and comfort. This trip was especially meaningful as we were celebrating my retirement with family, and it couldn’t have been a more perfect setting. The atmosphere, the people, and the beauty of the hotel made it truly unforgettable – a celebration we’ll cherish forever. I would 100% recommend Quintinha de São João to anyone visiting Madeira. It’s a hidden gem with heart, and I already dream of returning one day.
