"Unfriendly owner"

8.0

I had the pleasure to meet the owners and Maritzza was an Angel but her husband is not nice at all and for that reason provably will not stay there and will not recommend this hotel, Zoila and Jorge were very nice people.

"Nice hotel in a safe area of the city."

This trip was a vacation and stayed at this hotel on our last night in San Jose before returning back home. Great restaurants within walking distance.

"nice hotel and great staff"

8.0

nice clean and spacious room on ground floor. Breakfast was plentiful and served in a nice garden setting. Location was good, you can walk to the centre in 15 minutes, but not at night. Yes, commuter trains pass close by and can be noisy.

"Small hotel with great staff"

8.0

Hotel 1492 is a nice place to stay with great staff. Rooms are small but quite nice. Very good price!! It is a bit far out to walk places, but with Uber or their cab connection, easy to get wherever you want to go.

"Quaint"

8.0

Hotel 1492 belongs to the same owner as Boutique Hotel de la Luz. 1492 Was in a neighborhood where iron fences topped with razor-wire lined the streets. The Hotel itself was nice. It was clean. It turned out to be a historic place as well. The manager and rest of the staff were very helpful. The lesson we learned: don't believe online reviews. Both Hotels were probably okay for travelers backpacking their way through the country, but not our cup of tea.

"Location, value & outstanding service with a BIG but..."

8.0

Ok, so this is probably the toughest review I have ever had to write. What makes it tough? The train. This hotel is extremely well located, just a few steps away from the Paseo Gastronomico La Luz which is a street full of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, ice cream parlors, etc. in Barrio Escalante. It is also a block away from the main road that takes you to either San Pedro or downtown San Jose, so you are in the middle of everything. I usually move around using taxicabs but here I went with Uber and it was perfect, so I do recommend using it. I even returned to the airport on Uber rather than paying $30 or $35 for transportation and it came to about $14. That's more than 50% off. This hotel is more of a bed & breakfast. The room and bathroom were clean, it had a TV, a small safe and the beds were OK. EVERYONE was extremely friendly and helpful. We had breakfast every day for about $3 and it was very good, plentiful and quick. Now to list some of the "issues" that might be troublesome for some, but that weren't for me. First the train. Trains go by very near this hotel from Monday to Friday starting at about 6 a.m. and ending around 8 p.m. If you are like me, that wakes up early and head out to enjoy most of the day, then this won't be an issue. But if you are a light sleeper, or like to take mid afternoon naps, then you should seriously reconsider. On weekends, this was barely a problem so I guess they are mostly commuter trains. The second issue was the lack of a/c. This is very common in cities were the climate tends to be cool at night. I sleep every night with the a/c on (being from Panama, it's almost a need) but there I only used the ceiling fan and the temperature was cool and comfortable. I didn't miss the a/c. Then again, just a heads up in case you NEED to sleep with an a/c. I would have graded it higher but the train noise is something to consider, not only for this hotel, but for others in the same area. You will read the reviews and will notice the recurring theme. Regardless of that, I have nothing but praise for the hotel and the staff. They made my stay memorable. You can be sure this will be my hotel on my next trip to San Jose. More pluses than minuses.

"Not the best hotel"

We stayed only a night and it was very loud: there is the train just behind the hotel. There are lot of restaurants and bars around.
