We recently stayed at Peaks of Otter Lodge and had a very mixed experience. The setting is beautiful, and it’s a great place to disconnect and enjoy nature. The highlight of our stay was the Sharp Top shuttle ride—Dave made it such an enjoyable experience! Drinks at the bar were also wonderful, and the pricing on them was very reasonable. However, for $250/night, we expected more from the room. It was very outdated, the bed was extremely uncomfortable and hard, and the air conditioner barely worked. There was no phone in the room, and it lacked basic amenities like a mini fridge or microwave, which should be standard at this price point. To top it off, we found a spider in the bathtub upon arrival. The check-in process was slow with a long wait at the front desk just to get our room key. While we were at the lounge, there was a wedding party that made the space overwhelmingly loud, and it was hard to place a drink order with so many people crowding the bar. This lodge has potential and the location is stunning, but the rooms and guest experience need updates to match the price.

We appreciated the ground floor room as we could walk right out onto our “patio” to enjoy the gorgeous views of the lake, mountains, deer and well maintained grounds. Accommodations are basic, which we expected. Bed was comfortable but the pillows are ready for replacement-all lumpy. Our shower had a drainage problem so I was precluded from a shower after my husband took an abbreviated one. We reported it on check out. Lovely paved walk around the lake. Food was delicious in the dining room at dinner and the breakfast buffet. Service was mixed but everyone was friendly.

Rustic- but in the best kind of way. Don’t expect a spa, but you will leave refreshed.

A beautiful mountain getaway! My room was basic but comfy and clean and the beautiful views and mountain setting is what makes this place so pretty. Staff were friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay again.

Lots of scenery and hiking

We recently stayed here for a long weekend and overall it was a very nice experience. I will start with the positives. First, the location cannot be beat. Located directly off of the Blue Ridge Parkway just outside of Bedford the lodge offers easy access to a number of great hiking and walking trails. It is the perfect setting for a mountain escape. The guestrooms are clean, comfortable, and come equipped with a Keurig and a nice selection of teas and coffees. Housekeeping was also very helpful with refreshing some of our towels and coffee/tea supplies on our second day. Every room has a balcony/patio with breathtaking views of the lake and mountains. We ate all of our meals at the onsite restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed everything we tried. Each dish was delicious and prepared with fresh ingredients. We also thoroughly enjoyed the morning breakfast buffet. Now for the areas that could use some improvement. Some of the staff is definitely in need of better guest service training. When booking I requested early check-in since I knew I would be arriving around noon. When I arrived and attempted to check-in (1:00pm) I was told bluntly to come back at 3:00. No offer to check with housekeeping or estimate on when the room would be ready. Now I understand that early check-in is only a request and cannot be guaranteed, but most hotels will at least make an attempt at accommodating the request. The restaurant is another area where the staff could benefit from additional training. Some of the staff were great, but others were clearly struggling. While all of the food was excellent, I was disappointed to see that some of my favorites are no longer on the menu. I would not let these negatives discourage you from staying here, just have reasonable expectations regarding the level of service that can be expected.
