Matera is right up there with Santorini, Dubrovnik and Kotor as places that take your breath away - a stunning and unique place that can move you to tears on first viewing. As with Oia on Santorini, the best places to stay involve paying the price of overcoming the physical barriers to reach them. Locanda di San Martino is such a place, particularly if you stay in the rooms away from the main hotel. The view from and quality of room 84 was about as good as it gets, the trek to breakfast every morning the complete opposite - and the breakfast served hardly justified the effort. The buffet offering was poor - hardly any fresh fruit, warm fruit juice, no cereal/granola, nothing hot at all. And only one cappuccino per person, which as the Americano coffee was like paint stripper was unwelcome. The thermal baths were fantastic, well worth paying for, but when I mislaid the locker key I was scolded like a naughty schoolboy and treated with disdain. Poor. I would recommend Matera to everyone and this hotel to the fit and healthy.
