"Quirky, quaint, interesting, not great"

6.0

I wish I could rate this place more highly, as I love older hotels which have kept their individuality, which this place has. Alas, there were problems. As each room is different, I don't know how much my comments might apply to a different room, but I can only relate my own experience. The most notable problem was that the room was very dark. My theory is that the inn was built before air conditioning was common, and keeping out the intense sun was a good thing. Now it's just depressing. The weather was glorious, but the only outdoor area where we could escape the gloom of our room was used by smokers and stank. Somehow the other hotels we stayed in managed to keep their mattresses clean without resorting to crackly plastic mattress covers. Ugh. Other than that the beds were very comfortable. The room was clean -- or seemed to be; it was too dark to inspect it carefully, but everything appeared very clean. I get frustrated by things that do not function as they should. The clock could not be set. The wifi worked maybe 20% of the time. The turntable in the microwave did not work, although the microwave did cook things. There was no coffeemaker in the room, so we had to go looking for breakfast (outside the hotel) while half awake. There was no shampoo in the bathroom. Not nearly enough outlets in the room. The bathroom was down a step from the room, a hazard for middle-of-the-night visits. However the price was about half that of the sterile modern cookie-cutter hotels across the street and just as convenient to the convention center. I might choose this hotel again. We didn't find it as bad as many reviewers seemed to indicate. But it was less than ideal.

Great downtown Riverside location. No amenities, but the rooms are clean and it's good value for what you get. Very close to Convention Center and lots of restaurants.

"not going back again"

4.0

Well when I checked in they tried to charge me again after I already prepaid . There was only 10 to 12 parking spaces luckily we got there early enough to get the last one. When we finally got to the room, one of the beds had some nasty looking stains on the comforter. There wasn't really a closet. The sink was too far from the bathroom. The room was clean, no roaches or bed bugs, so I guess that's a plus. We got a non-smoking room so we would go out to the street to smoke and the Hotel attendant would stand there and watch us. It was creepy.
