I did not like how some of the guests or public would litter around the Lev Yerushalayim. I liked everything else about Lev Yerushalayim, their staff, the grounds and their service. It is an amazing hotel.

"Loyal Guest No More"

2.0

I’ve stayed at Lev Yerushalyim for over ten years. However, after new owners bought the hotel, I had a terrible experience in April of this year. I was in Israel with my girlfriend for both the Passover holiday and also to visit the cemetery where my father was buried. He had passed away last year in New York City after battling pancreatic cancer and this was the first time I could visit the cemetery due to travel restrictions during the pandemic. While Lev Yerushalyim was never a 5 star hotel, it was always clean and the staff used to always be helpful and responsive to guests. I’ve stayed at hotels in numerous countries all over the world, but this stay was definitely my worst. When I checked into Lev Yerushalyim hotel, I had a reservation for 17 nights. Since it was a long stay, I asked if I could pay for part of it now and pay the remaining part when I check out, as the previous owners always let me. The woman at the front desk said no. So since the new owners did not know me, I figured this is their policy and I let them charge my card for almost $3,000 US. I was given an electronic key for my room on the second floor. Upon exiting the elevator I was surprised to see that there was trash all over the hallway floor from the elevator leading all the way to my room. The carpet was visibly not vacuumed in some time. I figured the staff would clean it by the next day, but they actually never cleaned the floor for as long as I was there. I tried the key card in the door, but it did not work. That’s ok. Sometimes that happens. I went downstairs and they ran the key card again. I went back upstairs. It did not work again. I went back down and they gave me a regular key. The regular key worked. However, it didn’t open the door easily and kept turning and turning without opening the lock immediately. The room was obviously not cleaned before we checked in. However, since my girlfriend was feeling sick and it was getting late, we settled in so she could sleep. This room was horrible. The bathroom was not clean. There was urine in the toilet. The toilet was not flushed and the toilet seat was up. The back of the entry door was full of dust as if it was sanded but never cleaned. The heating system was broken. Despite the thermostat dial listing 30 Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) as the highest temperature, the heat did not work at all. Jerusalem, which is high up in the mountains, is known to have chilly nights. The staff said the heating system in the hotel did not work. I told them my girlfriend was sick and she needed a heated room so she wouldn’t become more ill. They sent a portable heater to the room. I turned it on and it did not work. The staff said they would send another portable heater. Several hours past and they still did not send the second heater. I let them know that I still did not receive it. Again, they said they would send it. They never sent it. There were other issues which contributed to the bad experience. The blankets had brown stains on them. There was a closet door near the entry of the room. However, it was not a closet for clothing. There was a sewer pipe in it. Every time someone flushed a toilet above us we could hear it pass through the closet. The top of the headboard of the bed was so low that when you sat up to lean back and recline, you could not avoid from hitting your head on it. There were two televisions. One TV was missing a cable box. Both TVs did not work. When we arrived, the safe in the room was not unlocked as it is always is when you check into a hotel. Not only that, but it was a very tiny and smaller than modern hotel room safes. This one would not be able to fit a small laptop. The room was a corner room which made for an odd triangular shape. Because of the shape of the room and the position of the bed, there were only a few inches to squeeze by to walk to the other side of the bed. While the bed position is something that is tolerable, with all the other issues, and to have to deal with this for over two weeks was just not ideal. I asked the manager if I could check out of the hotel and receive a refund for the days I would not stay at the hotel. He said no. When I told him about all the problems, he was very condescending and said, “Smile, it’s the holidays.” After about 3 days of putting up with this experience, and since I was told I could not receive a refund, I booked a room at another hotel and figured I would return to Lev Yerushalyim if the other hotel was worse. Luckily, the other hotel was fine and had no issues. A few days later I decided to leave some luggage in my room at Lev Yerushalyim so I could travel for two days to the Dead Sea area of Israel and not have to bring all my luggage. Since I was told I could not get a refund for leaving Lev Yerushalyim early, I never checked out of the hotel despite having to stay and pay for a better hotel nearby. When I arrived at Lev Yerushalyim with my luggage, I found that my room was being used as a storage room for housekeeping. The room was also never cleaned since I was there last. There was a maids cart in the room. The bedspread and sheets were on the floor even though I had left them on the bed. The bathroom was being used to store shampoo and soap bottles for the rest of the hotel. I never checked out of Lev Yerushalyim because I was told I could not get my money back. But I wasn’t going to let that ruin my trip to Israel. I had to spend more money to stay at a decent hotel because I wasn’t going to spend 17 nights at a hotel that did not provide basic proper services. Since I realized that it would not be safe to leave my luggage at Lev Yerushalyim, I decided to head to the Dead Sea with all my luggage with me. After I returned home from my trip, I contacted Lev Yerushalyim four times to ask them to refund me for 12 of the 17 nights that I ended up not staying there. After all, they took over the room when I was not in it despite them telling me I could not check out. They never responded. I then sent them my request via FedEx and despite my letter being signed for by the hotel, they never responded. The previous owners sold this hotel to people who do not understand or maybe they just don’t care about the hospitality industry. Before this experience, I would always recommend this hotel to friends, family and my social network followers. Unfortunately, now I can never recommend Lev Yerushalyim to anyone. Luckily there are much better options nearby, like the Ibis and Leonardo Boutique hotels for budget travelers and The Inbal and Dan Panorama hotels for travelers with larger budgets.

"Back again, but with caveats"

6.0

           I spent four nights at Lev Yerushalayim in early May 2022.  I've been there many times before.  It's a solidly three-star hotel, whose best feature is its location smack in the middle of downtown Jerusalem, steps away from numerous bus lines, the light rail, the Ben Yehuda pedestrian mall, and plenty of synagogues.   You can walk from the hotel to the Old City's Jaffa Gate in less than a half hour.           What I -- and apparently other guests -- did not anticipate was that in trying to fix up the place after about two years of covid, work was left undone.  For example, the flexible shower hose in our bathrooms had no hook to hang it on, forcing me and assume the others to crouch over in the tub trying to get enough water on to soap up, then rinse off.  The hard plastic shower door covered only 1/3 the length of the tub, so no matter how carefully I tried water inevitably got on the floor.  There were no towel bars or even toilet paper roll yet installed.            When I discussed this at the desk downstairs, a custodian who happened to be there said the parts had not yet come in.  And no, no concession on the hotel rate was offered.  When I handed to the desk the pulled off inside handle of the lobby-level door on the only guest stairway, the handle remained unrestored for three days; that dearth of action can't be attributed to a lack of parts.            When I asked my travel agent while booking the hotel why the rates had gone up, he responded that the hotel needed to recoup money lost during covid.  So for example, a breakfast cost $16 now, compared to $11 b.c. (before covid).  Yes, the breakfast is o.k., but no, nothing was upgraded.

"Location=5, Hotel=0"

We made our reservations for an 18-day stay about two weeks before arrival. Our arrival from Ben Gurion Airport was close to midnight (after our flight from San Francisco). We should have suspected something right from the start. The desk clerk checked us in and created magnetic cards for our door lock. He handed us the cards and then said, “Those probably won’t work, so here’s a real key.” Our attempt to sleep in the next morning was foiled by the curtain drooping with hooks unattached from the curtain rod. (However, we didn’t miss much since a violent storm brought rain and hail to the streets … no fault of the hotel.) Breakfast was the usual Israeli buffet overflowing with fish, eggs, biscuits, rolls, juices, coffee, tea and all things dairy. Breakfast is NOT included in the room rate. However, there is a meal plan. Unfortunately, the chefs aren’t there and no meals are available other than breakfast and on Sabbath. After breakfast we wished to call some family members, but found that our phone didn’t work. An inquiry to the front desk was answered with, “If you want to make an outside call, come down to the front desk and we’ll make it for you. The room phones do not provide for outside calls.” I should mention, as a point of interest that apparently a good part of the hotel’s income has traditionally derived from the Chassidic community that travels from the surrounding area to attend a Sabbath weekend each week. Orthodox guests, with men in formal regalia, many wearing fur hats, arrive with their often-large families throughout Friday afternoon. In consideration of Orthodox observance, the hotel provided actual real “Shabbat keys” for rooms so that electric power would not be used. In the same spirit, one of the two elevators operated automatically, going from floor to floor continuously. Shabbat services are held prior to dinner, which typically begins after 8:00 pm. The meal is expensive, but extravagant. The buffet overflows with a variety of meats, vegetables and deserts. Red wine appears on every table. Heaps of chicken schnitzel (the Israeli national bird) are devoured and followed by more heaps. Little kids run uncontrolled between tables and the legs of adults. Teenagers flirt, but don’t touch. The Shabbat festivities go on until near midnight, so don’t expect quiet in your room. Morning finds the crowd at the typical big breakfast after which the men begin their services in the cleared dining room and kids romp in the courtyard. A late but abundant lunch is served, followed by naps, Torah studies and then evening prayers. After (religiously official) sundown guests check out and leave the crowded lobby for their transportation home and a new week begins. (Parenthetically, on our first Shabbat, the non-Shabbat elevator became stuck on the top floor of the hotel. Our suite was located on the fourth floor and we were reluctant to climb, so we grudgingly took the floor-to-floor option. The elevator remained stuck for the next three days.) Now back to the continuing adventure. On our second night, after an early dinner at a nearby eatery we returned to the hotel and thought to watch a news program. The television set did not respond to the power button. About a half hour after our call to the front desk the hotel’s engineer arrived. At first, he attempted to show us how the remote worked. However, the remote didn’t work. Then he tried disconnecting and reconnecting the cable box. A few rounds of this and he left to get a replacement. The cable box replacement failed to ignite the TV set. The next step was to push buttons on the back of the TV with the expectation that its condition would change. Nothing changed, so the engineer retreated to his dungeon and returned a half hour later with a replacement TV set. The combination of replacements appeared to work and we watched the news in Hebrew, which satisfied Haya. While relaxing as we watched the hotel engineer we thought of having a cup of coffee. Packets of coffee, tea and sugar were in a bowl on the table. The water in the electric coffee pot quickly boiled and we looked into the closet above the sink for cups. No cups. In fact, no plates or flatware. We called the front desk and they promised to send such aids to our coffee-making. A while later a knock on the door heralded a young man who handed us a box with a few plates, cups and glasses. In addition, we received a pot. We were curious about the pot since the room had no stovetop and a steel pot was not suitable for the small microwave oven. We found that the pot contained the flatware. We left the room to do a bit of breakfast shopping in the morning. On our return the front desk called and offered us a change of suite to compensate for the problems of our then current room. After looking at the room they offered, we decided to take it because the “suite” was larger though the view was composed of the water filtering and heating units, the air conditioning units and other machinery pertaining to the next-door shopping center. We moved all our things including the pot, flatware, dishes and packets of coffee and hoped for the best. Alas, we hoped in vain! Scrub as we would, the labels did not come off the coffee cups nor were the coffee stains amenable to soaping. Speaking of which, we had to use bath soap bars to clean dishes since no liquid soap was provided. And, thinking about cleaning, the breakfast table was not once washed by the room attendant during our stay. The hotel failed to notify us that cleaning was provided every other day, but fresh towels were delivered as requested. Our expectations differed from reality. The weather turned hot and the air conditioner blew hot air. The weather turned cold and the air conditioner blew cold air. The previous tenant had left mud tracks in the bathroom. The floors were never washed during our stay, though they were vacuumed. As with the first room, the curtains were an engineering marvel as they did not fall although mostly unhooked. There must be something about levitation in the Holy Land. The room safe did not open, so we called the front desk as the posted sign instructed. The engineer, who by this time must have been tired of us, came to open the safe. After a number of attempts, he could not open the safe with the master key. He retreated to wherever engineers go and returned in about a quarter hour with a new safe. He attached the new safe to the closet shelf with screws, leaving the old safe in place behind it. The safe worked. It was presumably “safe,” except for the fact that the whole shelf could be easily lifted out of the closet. The TV didn’t work! Again, the front desk sent the engineer. Our fault??? The TV remote didn’t work because the TV was not turned on at the set. The engineer left after “teaching” us how to turn the set on. After he departed we discovered that the set could receive only one channel!! We gave up for the day! Sitting in the small “kitchen nook” was always a challenge to the ears. Air flowing through the plenum over the sink howled like a wounded banshee chained to the wall both day and night. Finally (maybe), the bathroom and bedroom doors squealed like angry elephants each time they were moved. My wife said, “Can’t you grease them?” First, I had to find the bedroom light switch. I found it very logically installed behind the bedroom door so that it couldn’t be detected until the door was closed and the room dark. I thought about what could substitute for oil. There was margarine in the small refrigerator, but that might start to smell after a few days. Aha! There was body lotion in the bathroom. I poured body lotion onto the hinges! It worked … at least as long as we had the suite. Current rating: “Location= 5-star, Accommodation= 0-star.” We now have a new contender for the lowest rung of the ladder. Imagine 18 days and nights of this stay! My salvation was Hollandia beer … better than its Russian equivalent and still 12% by volume.

Great in concept, all suites, but run down. Only 2 men to clean the 100 rooms and everything. Skeleton crew: 1 person at the desk. One person on reservations. No food service during the week, only on weekends.

We have always liked to stay here because of location. Although, this time, the hotel looked very run down. Now, as i understood it, it had been bought by new people and they were in the midst of making renovations. However, that does not excuse the fact that we checked in Thurs evening and our room had not been cleaned till we asked them to on Wednesday! And our door handle was falling off from the outside. It was disappointing.
