"5 star plus for the staff"

10.0

The staff are absolutely the best ever at this hotel. Every single one of them we dealt with from the front of house to the barman from Sri Lanka were the loveliest we have ever met at a hotel. They are a credit to the hotel. Hotel was clean and value for money.

"Man, what a dump"

2.0

Where do you start… dirty rooms, cob webs like Halloween.. air con broken, room like a furnace, open the window to look out onto a pigeon family, full of poo and the window ledge falling apart ..the fear of them coming in the room to join me meant I could not leave the the window open, that’s if you can call it a window with the level of grime on it..bedside lamps not working , general lighting awful.. just a slum.. appreciate it was 100 a night but I could not wait to leave. It’s like the royal Windsor in national lampoons European vacation !

"Impressive building"

8.0

A nice hotel in central Derby. The building is very impressive. The rooms have been recently refurbished and are clean and tidy. There is limited parking at the front of the hotel but it comes down to luck if you get a space there. The staff were helpful but beware the bar / restaurant shut at 9 on the day i arrived and the ingredients for breakfast could have been better quality.

"Extra touches which improve the quality of stay"

Good sized, well-equipped rooms Very comfortable bed As a coffee lover there is no skimping on the supplies - in some hotels you have to find the nearest shop to buy coffee Recommend for close to the centre

"Just ok, needs tidying up and a better breakfast."

6.0

Stayed in this hotel a few times over the last 10 years for one night stops. It's in a great location for anything you're doing in Derby City centre (going to watch DCFC for me). Lots of pubs and restaurants nearby, easy access to train station, buses and taxis. However, the standard of the building itself has deteriorated. It's looking tired and in need of decorating/refurbishment. My room windows were filthy, pigeon poo on the ledge. Walls and carpets need replacing/decorating and breakfast is very average. Orange juice came in a tiny plastic carton with all of two mouthfuls, water for tea from one of those push to pour big flasks (not hot enough). Minimal parking (4-5 cars) so you'd have to use Bold Lane car park which is very secure and just a couple of minutes walk but extra cost. Staff were attentive and friendly but it's expensive for what it offers. Leonardo just 5 minutes walk away is much better for similar price, it was sold out on this occasion.

"Very disappointing"

4.0

One of the worst hotels I’ve stayed in a long time, with a cheap hotel rate I did not have high expectations, but it did not prepare me for some of the issues we experienced. The only positives were the location, curb appeal of the hotel from the outside and comfortable beds. Staff were friendly, but possessed little experience in terms of customer service and lacked any attention to detail/ pride in their service. The hotel is a shadow of its former self, and to be frank would benefit from a general deep clean and some basic maintenance. The cleanliness of the room was very poor including dust and cobwebs in obvious/ visible places and hairs on the bathroom floor - I wish I brought my flash speed mop and duster with me. The room itself was dark, dingy and cramped with numerous issues - this included numerous carpet stains, the wardrobe wobbling and plug holes for the bath and sink missing or broken. We were part of a larger group and found that even though the same room rate/type was booked there were vast differences between the size and quality of the rooms. When I spoke with reception the room type is purely based on the size of the mattress in the room. Breakfast was included within our room rate, the fried breakfast was of very poor quality and the ‘continental’ aspect of the breakfast literally consisted of toast, yoghurt pots, bran flakes/ cornflakes and juices in small plastic cartons. I’d recommend instead going ‘room only’ and getting breakfast at the Wetherspoons which is around the corner. In other words if you would like a clean room and a consistent product I’d suggest the nearby Premier Inn or Leonardo hotels.

"A characterful hotel in a great location."

10.0

This is a historic building in a perfect location for exploring Derby. It does have some parking but we arrived by train and walked to the station which took us about 20 minutes. All the staff were friendly and very helpful. As it is close to the Cathedral you can sometimes hear the bells but it did not bother us. It was nice to stay in a hotel with so much character rather than a bland modern chain.
