The Vine

Lovely hotel in great location. Staff were pleasant and helpful, rooms were well equipped, clean and comfortable and there was an amazing breakfast buffet.

FAB hotel in central and nice location with plenty of things to do.

The hotel is very tired and dated. The rooms and hotel in general is so dark, it’s like being in a cave. We had an atrium room which I would not recommend because you just have a wall of apartments staring into your room. The bed is the worst I’ve slept on for years and every time you use the shower, the bathroom floods.

Having visited Madeira for more than 20 years, and now in my 80s, I decided to opt for a hotel closer to the centre. That was my first mistake: choosing The Vine was not a good move. The second mistake was in paying for an upgrade to a junior suite. This is not a place for those who prefer a bit of privacy while performing ablutions. Sure, the toilet and bidet were enclosed, but the glass panelled shower was not private. The washbasin etc were part of the room. To make matters worse, the bath, faux-crocodile panelled, was in the middle of the room, with no privacy whatsoever. Leave the curtains open, and the builders working next door got an eyeful. The extra space I paid for was just that, space. No comfy chairs I could relax in to read a book. Just two loungers. Housekeeping excellent. Breakfast staff excellent, and the robot entertaining. Breakfast comprehensive. But twice we came to the bar for an evening drink only to find it closed. We were directed to the open air rooftop wine bar - cold and breezy. But I had to ask. The reception staff just ignored us. On the occasion we did find it open the slippery chairs had you under the table before you started drinking. In a couple of days from now it is going to rain all day, but there is no guest lounge where we could relax for the day. We’ll just have to go out and wander about in the rain. For the record, this is not some random, ill-informed whinge. Before I retired, I did hotel and restaurant reviews for Expedia and Michelin, plus a luxury review website. But The Vine is dark…everywhere. Apparently, the designer doesn’t realise that she doesn’t have what it takes. And it’s time management woke up and started addressing negative substance.

Hotel is very stylish and modern, with a central location for coastline, bars and restaurants. The rooftop bar and pool has fantastic views over the area. All areas of the hotel are spotless. We didn't use the spa, so no comments on that. Breakfast was great, lots of choice, both hot and cold. Room was nice, but (small gripe)would have liked bedside tables and charging points there. The Lobby bar closes at 11pm, which I feel is quite early. We arrived at 10.30 one evening, after a meal in town and bar was closed. We were told we could get a drink on the roof, but as we got up there, that was readying to close. (Thank you Jorge for serving us a nightcap!) Worth noting that there were major buildings works happening very close to the property, which began early and were quite noisy. All in all, we had a pleasant stay at The Vine.

Lovely hotel with some dated charm which is not a criticism- staff are friendly and helpful the breakfast buffet is fantastic and the location ideally placed for the port and shopping- in fact the hotel is incorporated with a shopping centre- but don’t be fooled from the outside. There is also a smart roof terrace bar and pool

The hotel is above a shopping centre without any grounds around the hotel, however, it is in an excellent location within easy walking distance to the old town. All the staff were very helpful throughout our stay. The bedroom was sleek and modern with an ‘open plan’ shower/wash area. The beds were very comfortable with 3 different pillows varying from soft to firm. There are no views other than from the rooftop swimming pool and bar area but this didn’t significantly detract from the stay as we were out most of the time. The breakfast buffet was excellent with good quality ingredients and freshly squeezed orange juice. We were also amused by the mobile robot which took the dirty dishes back to the kitchen. Overall the hotel lives up to it’s 5 star billing, is excellent value for money and I would highly recommend a stay at the Vine the next time you are in Funchal.

Great location, walking distance to everything. Very good breakfast buffet. Rooms are nice but we had issues with our bathtub. Our room could have used a little love considering it's a 5 star hotel. Jacuzzi and sauna room could use some love as well. The overall look of the interior is dark. Considering the low ceilings, it does not help. The entrance of the hotel is through the mall and the parking is good to have but prepare to go through a maze to get to the front desk. Just follow the signs and you should be ok. Rooftop bar, pool and patio are very nice. Very good views.

The Vine was an excellent place to stay. The area was ideal for a solo traveler.
