"Grubby hotel"

6.0

Hotel looked nice from the outside but very deceiving once you walk through the door. Hotel room was grubby, carpets stained quite badly & the walls dirty. Bathroom tiles black with mould. Disgusted that I had to paid an extra £30 for one nights stay because I had my two very small Yorkie dogs with us.

This could be an absolute gold mine, but the rooms are tired and the attention to detail just isn’t there! The barman walked out during our meal, so there was no one serving for a short time! Not a great choice for vegans (evening meal), but the breakfast was great!

"Good for a night's halt"

6.0

I booked The Gables because it looked perfect for breaking our journey from our home to Scotland, was only a few miles off the M6, was dog-friendly and was not too expensive (though £15 for a dog was a bit excessive!). My greeting at reception was lovely and the receptionist immediately changed my room to a ground-floor one when I reminded her about our dog, there was ample parking, and it was easy to get from our room to the outside (bonus when you're travelling with a dog). We paid extra for breakfast (extremely good value) and it was delicious. I had some minor gripes: our room was small - especially with a dog - with nowhere to lay suitcases nor hooks to hang (eg) coats, and a little 'shabby', we could find nowhere nearby to buy a snack (though there were shops, chippies a short way down the road as we found too late!), and we couldn't find anywhere nearby to exercise our very energetic dog. The bath towels hadn't been changed but this was an oversight and would have been immediately dealt with had I mentioned it at reception (I made do with the clean hand towel being far too lazy to contact reception again!). If I travel that way again, none of my minor gripes would deter me from staying - they could all be managed now I know what they are - and I'd still recommend The Gables for a night's stop.

"Well located hotel, good VFM accomodation @ Gretna"

8.0

Hotel for a couple of nights while we had things to do in the Gretna locale ;) Easy to find with good parking. Check in friendly with a warm welcome. Staff made it easy to get bags to the room and were super helpful. Room was clean & excellent - comfortable bed, clean bathroom. Shower lacked water flow but did the job. Plenty of power sockets & Freeview TV. Comp. Prosecco & chocs. were a surprise addition to the room on arrival! Breakfast selection was good, & included gluten free options. Friendly staff. Evening food is from a limited menu (1 night only) &, to be honest, was not so good. Starter of Mushrooms with blue cheese dressing. Served on a small half moon plate - mushrooms skated everywhere when being cut.The dressing tasted sufficiently off to be inedible. Liver parfait was OK. Mains of King Prawn linguini and Steak (+£8). Side of garlic bread (good).Prawns were barely warm and didn't taste the best. Not all eaten and one removed half chewed as I feared for possible after effects. Linguini had a slightly slimy texture to it. Steak - chips nice & hot, steak (requested rare) was almost inedible and mostly left on the plate. The burgers coming out looked far better TBH. Drinks priced as you might expect. Evening bar staff friendly. The bar (while we were there) was well used. Were happy to provide ice bucket & glasses for fizz. Weather was good during visit & outside sitting space was pleasant.Just beware of the murder of resident crows circling before roosting!

"Disappointing"

Unfortunately this hotel has gone down hill badly, unlike 10 years ago when we stayed there. In big need of an update all round. Minimal staff, that are multitasking. So disappointed to say the least.

A good hotel in an excellent location close to the motorway. Good dinner and breakfast. The room was in need of a little maintenance and updating but was quiet and comfortable. Good amounts of free parking.

"Good"

4.0

Our room, although spacious was covered in dust and inhabited by spiders. With the kitchen extractor fan located directly outside our bedroom window, it made sleeping difficult. Walls had been touched up with different colour paint and the skirting boards in the bathroom, haven’t seen a duster in many years! Although the food was lovely, the service delivered many mistakes during our food order, from items being missed or incorrect orders. Has the potential to be very beautiful but really does require an overhaul.
