"Be prepared for a timeshare pitch, even if you paid rack rate."

2.0

There are a lot of problems at this “resort”, all accurately described in the other reviews. Odd layout, expensive low quality food options, dated rooms. The grounds are lovely nicely landscaped and maintained. We came prepared with low expectations but our trip was a gift from my son so we decided to try and make the best of things. The staff was extremely attentive but we got the sense that as “non owners” we were being lined up for a timeshare presentation. We were “introduced” to the concierge who asked a lot of probing, classic high pressure sales, leading questions. I cut her off pretty quickly but it was an awkward start to our vacation. We were not there to be sold a timeshare but that was what they were trying to do. I’ll bet both the front desk team and the concierge are compensated for referrals to the sales team. It was that obvious. Once in our room we soon realized that the walls were paper thin. We could hear and understand every word coming from the “adjoining” room next door. The room was occupied by two men who had been drinking. They were loud and obnoxious and at some point during the night had a woman in the room as well. They were in and out of the room from 10PM to 4am. We called the desk on four separate occasions. At one point they dispatched a security guard. Of course we heard the whole conversation, basically the men claiming nothing was wrong and the guard leaving. The party resumed soon after that. Later they “passed” out with the TV blaring I called the front desk for the 4th time at 4am. They called the room, of course we could hear this conversation as well, and the TV was turned off. The next day we went to the front desk to ask for a different room. They said they could not do that but they could have maintenance put a sound dampening blanket between the two lockout doors. Really? That’s it? They are aware of the sound problem but only put the blanket between rooms AFTER a guest complains? Fortunately for us the obnoxious drunks checked out that day but even with the sound dampening blanket, we could clearly every word spoken by the new guests who checked in. Bottom line is this place needs a major renovation, including soundproofing!

Sadly, this property has declined over the years, in spite of being in a constant state of renovation. While our time- share room had the expected amenities, well, let's just say it didn't sparkle. The hallways, stairwells, and other common areas were in severe need of repair (floor tiles were actually crumbling, carpets were dirty, our hallway had an offensive odor), and the elevator was such a mess we didn't dare use it. To top it off, the two major outdoor pool restaurants were closed for repair. Happily, the beach area was beautiful, the pool area very attractive, and close-by restaurants helped fill in the dining gaps. But the cost of our accommodations was in no way justified by the condition of the property. Unfortunately, this was not the 4-star 25th anniversary trip we had envisioned.

The property itself is beautiful and well maintained. Unfortunately the low review has more to do with Expedia’s false advertising and some aspects of the hotel. Expedia lists the room as a queen bed bedroom and turned out to be a pull out/sofa bed. I noticed it 2 days before our trip (they tell you it’s a wall bed on the confirmation after you purchase) of course I immediately tried getting a room change. I thought I bought the travel insurance, should be ok. Expedia wanted to charge me a ridiculous amount to get an actual bed even with the travel protection plan. We paid $1800 for 4 nights. Expedia wanted to charge another $2400 ($1700 penalty fee plus the room type difference). There was a lot of back and forth, between Expedia and the hotel. The hotel manager first told me we could do the change and just pay the difference but that I had to have Expedia do the change. I called Expedia again, they said no, and asked me to call the hotel. I called back the manager changed her mind and said she didn’t deal with changes from third parties and that she only dealt with people who had timeshares. We tried changing the room once at the hotel, they still didn’t allow it, which is too bad because at the end of the day we were still hotel guests. Of course the day after we checked in they wanted to schedule a meeting with us to try and sell us a timeshare. We also had incredibly loud neighbors, playing music at 4:45am. I’ve used Expedia for over 10 years, this is the last time.

"Small dated rooms. If walking a long way is hard for you then this really isn't the right place."

2.0

I was thoroughly disappointed with my stay at the Kauai Beach Club. There are different types of problems. Some may be improved but some are probably beyond remedy. If walking is hard for you then this isn't the right place. The layout of the property represents an important issue for some patrons. It is about 600 feet from the vehicle drop-off porte-cochere to the check-in desk. This is quite a walk for those who are aged or in ill health. From check-in to our room was about 400 feet more. That's a long way. And there's no alternative. The distance from our room to an on-property restaurant was never less than 500 feet, and sometimes more. If you customarily employ a walker or wheelchair at home you will probably bring some sort of mobility aid on vacation, but the distances that we had to walk came as an unpleasant surprise; we don't customarily walk that far on a sustained basis, so it was tiring. The hotel will arrange delivery from an off-site wheelchair rental firm, but only on a weekly basis. Frankly, it's stunning that they seemed unaware that the need to walk the required distances was daunting for older folks The Kauai Beach Club should not be mistaken for a luxury resort. The facilities are worn down. Hallway panels are chipped and delaminating. The hallways themselves are dim and sometimes actually dark. Stairwells are unkempt and in need of paint. Rooms are small and dated. Renovation may help, but our bathroom was cramped with a nearly obsolete tub/shower that was quite close to the commode. The "king-size" bed seemed like a queen to me. There was a connecting door with the adjacent room and we could hear everything going on in there. Kids are kids, but it was really loud. i don't know whether it will be possible to improve the acoustic isolation. There's a small microwave and a really small 'fridge. The on-property breakfast options seem to be a $64 breakfast buffet (for two). or a "grab and go," where two cups of coffee and two breakfast burritos cost $46. Public spaces have nice landscaping and the pools look good. They may be fine--I didn't swim in the pool. The beach is nice The hotel cost $360 per night. In Hawaii. We should have been wary.... Te

"Great family trip"

8.0

The resort was perfect in Oct. Not crowded but all activities were easily accessible-pool, beach, nature walks! The beach is calm and sandy perfect for my 2 year old niece to enjoy! There are plenty of restaurants and shopping with in walking distance. Lots of free or inexpensive activities offered on site. Would definitely return ! Construction was happening while we were here , only reason I rated it very good 4/5 stars !!

"From first class to ordinary"

6.0

This has become an ordinary time share rather then a resort. The amenities and perks have been severely reduced. In order to charge at the restaurant and pool you have to open a house account at the Sonesta Hotel and you lose your Bonvoy points bonus. You no longer get a discount at the Hokulua Golf Course on site. The one time discounts on the guest privileges card are skimpy. The restaurants in the adjoining area are few and run down. They now give you one tiny bar of soap and small bottle of body lotion under the guise of environmental impact. On the positive side the beach and pool are beautiful. The rooms are clean as are the grounds.

"Marriott Kauai Beach - Very average to below average for a Hawaii Beach Resort"

6.0

This resort is "just OK" with some good, some bad and some indifferent qualities. We own at the Maui Marriot vacation club and overall the Maui location is definitely much higher quality and in a much better location. The good - rooms are updated, well furnished and comfortable. However, the overall feel of the resort is odd, you get lost a lot, there is no flow to it. The property is shared with another resort, which has a grand check -n lobby. The Marriott has a small dark room off the main courtyard where you check in, which is very odd. The area around the resort has not much to offer, nothing to walk to or enjoy. Pretty much you drive off in a car or that is it. I like a place you can walk to nice amenities, restaurants, shops, etc. Not here. The bay is nice, but its not the wonderful open Pacific of Hawaii. You have to struggle to get a room on a floor with a decent view. The entry hallway to our tower was a utility walkway, not something inviting as a nice resort should be. Oh yeah the parking. I was assured there was plenty of nearby self parking. Well true unless you come back from dinner after say 9 PM, no parking so you need to pay the $30 a day for valet. And they fail to tell you there is an overflow lot you can use. Dining options are scarce and average. Pool area is OK, not terrible, not great. Want coffee and something in the morning to grab? There is one small place, and it closes at 10, with the next place not opening until 11. So if you want anything from 10 to 11, forget it. You need to time when you want your coffee. Overall, just very average to below average for a Hawaiian resort. We will definitely NOT be back. Marriott needs to up its game in this location for sure.
