My friend and I stayed for a week at the beginning of June this year, in what was for us perfect weather - warm, dry, sunny and around 24C every day.
This hotel is a real gem, it has many excellent features including a beautiful, large and immaculately clean pool; pretty gardens have several "rooms" with plenty of seating where you can just sit and read, listen to the birds, put your feet up or snooze; the sea is only yards away. The staff will happily bring hot or cold drinks out to you. There is a lovely gazebo where we took breakfast outside every morning, and we chose to upgrade to a sea view and balcony. The maids kept our rooms pristine.
The most important thing about the hotel, however, is the staff. From the moment of my first enquiry, I felt there was a real interest and enthusiasm in providing what I wanted. The welcome was palpable and indeed when we arrived, we were made to feel like family coming home and that is just the best feeling. The owner, Francesca, was always to be seen in and around the hotel.
I would like especially to praise and thank Agnese, on reception, who went to endless trouble for us, sorting out taxis, day trips, excursions and planning with us so that we could see all the things we really wanted to. She stayed on at the hotel beyond her regular departure time to greet us, which was so much appreciated. Lucia and Antonio, also on reception, could not have been more helpful. Bernardo was in charge of the food and drink, and was a very amusing addition to the team. All the waitresses smiled, greeted us, and looked after us very well. The taxi service Agnese arranged was reliable and fairly priced.
Because of its location by the sea, the hotel is a little distance from the town and we used taxis to take us to the railway station at Massa Centro from where we were able to get everywhere we wanted - including Portofino, Lucca, Pisa, Pietrasanta - on clean, inexpensive and reliable trains. It was well worth it to have the wonderfully peaceful and welcoming hotel to return to after our days out. The beach is easily accessible. We were just ahead of the school holidays, and I imagine the hotel and the area will become much busier once they begin.
There is much to see locally, we loved our tour to the white marble mountains of the Apuan Alps which Agnese arranged for us, and our trip to Portofino which is so pretty. Pietrasanta is charming and full of fascinating little art galleries, and Lucca is a historic gem. You could get to Florence at a pinch, but with so much in the vicinity, we were happy to save that for another visit.
Just behind the hotel there are a few little local shops, just enough for our needs - a baker, a deli and grocer, a gelato bar, a newsagent..
We had the most wonderful holiday, can't praise the staff enough, and will for sure return. Thanks to you all at the Hotel Villa Maremonti for a perfect holiday.
