"Palatial stay"

10.0

Like stepping back in time! The hotel is a living museum to the history of the building and the surrounding area. Really enjoyed staying in a hotel that is so rich in character and ambience.

"Old style, good quality"

8.0

We stayed at this hotel for three days and were fairly happy with this place and its surroundings. The weather was poor for the time of year, but the owners and staff can't help that, can they? Nor could they tell us they did not like the weather, as we do not speak a great deal of Portuguese and we did not encounter any member of staff who spoke English, French, Dutch or German. Still, everything went smoothly. Alegre is old style, with a lot of dark wood and the smell of wood polish that seems to go with it. You still get a good deal for what you pay: the amenities are OK, our room was not too big, but satisfactory for a three night stay in an area where you can visit a lot. There is a small pool, a (rather cramped) parking lot and buffet breakfast well supplied (egg is baked/cooked on request). Luso was well located to visit Aveiro, Coimbra and Conimbriga, while Busaco and the Vineyard area are worth a visit in their own right.

"Charming place with lovely people"

8.0

Spent a werkend here and just loved the place!!! It is an old style hotel but its charm is soemthing worth seeing. The swimming pool is not that big but I believe it is enough for the number of rooms of the hotel. It has everything you need and the mattress and sheets are soooo good!!! The breakfast is very good and fresh with a good variety of bread, cakes, ham and cheese. The chocolate cake is probably the best I have ever had (not too sweet and so fluffy). Eggs, sausages and bacon are also available and freshly made which is a plus compared with other places I have been before where the eggs and sausages are left there and you end up eating them cold. The stuff were very nice and helpful and suggested nice places to visit. Mata do bussaco is a couple minutes away. The location is also very good as you are 5min away from all the local amenities like restaurants, cafes, bakeries etc. It is great value for your money and it is a very quiet place!! Ideal for a long weekend for relaxing and resting. The only downside while we were there is that the bar was not open.

"Old and gracious"

10.0

Despite its old age, this hotel is very well kept and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. We got a warm welcome and liked the ambiance very much. The room was comfortable and overlooking some magnificent views of Luso and the area. Breakfast was very good as well.

"Old World Charm"

8.0

If you're looking for luxury, you won't find it here. This is an old hotel with its own unique character and history. The beds are hard and the hotel could do with some upgrading, towels in the bathroom were paper thin, but otherwise it's reasonably comfortable. I found the person at reception somewhat abrupt when we checked in, but the staff in the dining room were very pleasant and accommodating. The breakfast was simple, not great. The grounds are lovely with a nice quiet pool area to relax in and some parking in the back which made access to the rooms a little easier and there is no elevator. The village is charming with the São João Fountain in the village square where anyone can fill up their bottles with thermal spring water.
