Staff were great from the receptionist to the waitress, room was great, food was really good in the evening and breakfast too. would defiantly recommend and stay again in the future

From the warm friendly welcome on our arrival to the cheery farewell as we checked out, everything was great, particularly as the decision to book was a spur of the moment decision, you can do things like that when you are retired! The setting for this historic hotel is stunning, right in the centre of the Forest of Dean looking out onto a magnificent oak tree.

Living History in stunning surroundings. The thing that really makes this place special isn't it's royal connections or it's place in the heart of the forrest - it is the staff. Service as good as this is very rare, trained professionals with a friendly manner. Superb. Rooms are quirky with a huge variety of size, clean and reasonably equipped.

I stayed in the white building next to the main road. The room stank of dogs but arriving late I just wanted to get some sleep, but with hindsight should have asked to move. The windows do not block out noise from the road. The room was in need of a full refresh, very tired and dated. I found the breakfast very dry and slow service. Overall not somewhere I will return to.

Wonderful location in the heart of the forest. Excellent room at the top of the hotel which was spacious ad comfortable. Only criticism was that the shower was a dribble...taking a bath was fine as an alternative. Great breakfast and a pleasant evening meal.

Excellent facilities-My 70th Birthday Bash was fantastic-Food and in-house disco was great and staff friendly and very helpful-Stayed in the four poster bedroom which very clean and full of character-A lot of the guests went for a lovely walk in the forest after breakfast-Would definitely book again

Met friends for lunch, we travelling from Solihull and they from Cardiff. We've been a couple of times before and have not been disappointed. Things didn't start too well tough after having driven for an hour and a half, hence only four stars. We arrived at 12.00 for a 12.30 booking and were invited to sit and have a drink in the lounge before going to our table. Coffee arrived in minutes but my pint of lager shandy took 20 mins!! Maybe the bar staff were overwhelmed by folks taking part in local half marathon event gaining refreshment. However when we moved into the dining room all was well. As on previous occasions everything was fine. The staff were friendly, but professional, and efficient. The food was well prepared and presented. One of our party wanted beef but needed it well done, who knows why,and it was no problem. It arrived prepared just as she likes it. Excellent value for money at a little over £25/head including the pre-lunch drinks, coffee and wine though only two glasses of wine the drivers being very good. Recommended. We will no doubt visit again.
