The Speech House Hotel

Very dog friendly hotel. Made to feel very welcome. Food excellent

Stayed on 28th February just one night whilst visiting family locally, it’s a lovely old fashioned building with accommodation in the main building & annexes with plenty of car parking space available. Our room was very tidy with a large comfortable bed and a good sized spotlessly clean on suite bathroom. All the staff were very polite and professional. Breakfast was also very good with plenty of choice available for most dietary requirements, we had full English which only had half a slice of black pudding on it, but there was still plenty of food on the plate( seems a bit tight.) A lovely fire was burning in the fire place in the breakfast hall which was an excellent touch. We had a few drinks at the bar in the evening which was well stocked and reasonably priced. I also noted an all terrain type of mobility scooter for hire at the hotel for the less abled to be able to enjoy the local trails and tracks in the area

We visited the hotel for afternoon tea in the beautiful orangery. The selection of sandwiches, savoury and sweet treats were delicious and the freshly baked scones were light and fluffy. The service was great and we had a wonderful couple of hours enjoying our tea.

Had my 70th Birthday at Speech House on Feb 15th-Everything went really well -The disco was great,The food was very good and the staff were excellent-Slept in one of the four posters (So comfortable could of stayed there all day)-Will definitely book again-Highly recommend-Tim& Debs

Verderers' restaurant was mediocre at best. Overcooked crayfish bordering on mushy, tough steak which in part was inedible.. The most positive thing I can say is the tiny dessert was good. Attentive restaurant staff but although when asked, I said the steak was tough, no reaction was forthcoming.

We have always enjoyed lunch on Sundays at Speech House and were very much looking forward to staying for the weekend. It was unfortunate that a power cut due to a storm caused our accommodation to be left without power. We awoke at 4am freezing cold with no heating or hot water. We informed reception and after some time were offered an alternative room to shower and told to come back after 2 hours for an update. This went on for the whole day and we kept returning every 2 hours until finally in the evening we were told we could permanently move into another room. We weren't offered an apology at any point, no compensation or even a complimentary glass of wine! Plus I've stayed at a lot of high class hotels but £9 and £11 for a very average glass of house white and red is daylight robbery in my opinion. We will not be back.

I was quite late arriving after a long journey and was met by Tracey at the reception. She could not have been more welcoming or helpful…….it made a refreshing change from some other hotels. She organised a meal for me even though the kitchen had just closed. I felt so welcome, especially as a solo traveller. The hotel has a warm atmosphere with lots of comfy chairs to relax in. My supper was lovely and hot and tasty. Breakfast was also lovely and hot. The room was small but had everything I needed. All in all an excellent stay and good value for money. Highly recommend.
