Aloft by Marriott Birmingham Soho Square

The rooms are terribly designed and built. The bathroom: the pocket door was dangerously askew and slid out of its mooring each time we opened it. The carpet had stains all over it. The switch for the lights above and on each side of the bed can be controlled from only one side--a real drag if you and your mate fall asleep at different times. There are NO DRAWERS. Anywhere. Instead, there are open shelves--in the BATHROOM. When we arrived I took a clean, damp washcloth to wipe off one of the shelves and it not only came away dirty, but with several hairs on it. The shower: absurd. The pumps on the row of Dry Bar (a fine brand) shampoo, conditioner, and body wash bottles are located 5 feet, 8 inches above the shower floor. I repeat: 5 feet, 8 inches. Maybe if I was Luka Doncic I could reach those bottles. But at 5'3", it wasn't going to happen. The WXYZ bar in the lobby was well-stocked, and the bartender was a lovely woman, great at her job. But the recorded music there and throughout the lobby drowned out any possibility for conversation, or for hearing a word the desk staff said. Maybe that's because the chump who designed the place never learned that stone and concrete floors and walls do not absorb sound, they REFLECT IT. A short list of the hotels my husband and I have stayed in over the years is close to 75. Aloft Birmingham will long remain in our memories as the most poorly-designed lodging in which we have ever stayed.

Very impressed with front desk clerk Raven. Courteous, quick. Went out of her way to solve a booking.com problem. During the night we spotted 2 large bugs. Pointed it out manager and he was very apologetic. Called in the engineer. Gave us bonus miles.

The Aloft is our go to hotel in Birmingham. It is a perfect location to get anywhere in Birmingham. The staff are welcoming and friendly from check-in to housekeeping to the bartender. Highly recommend!!

The vibe

Everything was cool

I travel to Homewood for business 1-2X a year, and had stayed at another hotel nearby that I was so-so on.. and decided to try the Aloft, and was happy I did. The hotel is located within a bunch of good restaurants, some right across the street, and some within a 5-10 min walk. The parking is very convenient covered and connected to the hotel. The staff in the lobby were great - very friendly and helpful. Any time I walked into the lobby I was greeted with a smile and hello, and they enjoyed their interactions with guests. The room served its purpose. It's a tad on the small side but it's fine. I would have liked to have see a comfy love seat in the corner as there was only the chair at the desk. The pillows were firm which is a big plus for me. Bed was on a softer side - not my preference but was fine. The bathroom was good with a walk in shower and easy to get to and stay at the desired water temp. Only negative of the room was the loud HVAC unit in the room.. that may have affected my sleep.. Noise from inside or outside the room was little to none. Room was clean with hard wood floors. The hotel offers a light breakfast for free with fruit and either pound cake or hard boiled eggs at least while I was there. They also gave me a bottle water and some snacks (pretzels, peanuts) when I checked in. There was also a free bottled water in the room too. Overall, I enjoyed my stay here and would be happy to stay here again during my next business stay.
