Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites

Merdeka was in a good location for the touristy spots. However, the staff didn’t really give the feel that they were happy to have us there. They did their job, but there weren’t a lot of smiles or helpful gestures of any kind. Beautiful lobby, but the rest of the building was very dated and in rough shape…great need of a makeover. Price was good, but in this case you kind of got what you paid for. The hotel restaurant and massage parlor were not bad. Over-all I had a rather “meh” feeling, and would most likely opt for a different place if we come to Kuching again (which we will most likely do).

The staff were great however the hotel itself is dated and all furnishing are showing signs of wear and tear. The second elevator giving access to my room 614 was out of order for my 7 days stay.

Old style elegance. Rooms were a good size and comfortable. Very good value for cost.

I stayed in this hotel 12 years ago and it was amazing, but now, what was once 5 star service had turned into a budget hotel. Or maybe less. The place is now just a memory of it's former glory, with carpets in dire need of replacing, phone that is just not usable, and furniture so ancient. I think the saddest part is that the Victoria Arms is no more, which was once the highlight of that place. The staff however were pleasant and I know they were trying their best to provide the best customer service, but due to the lack of things, they were unable to do so. They can't even provide a bucket of ice just because the Victoria Arms is no more. I hope whoever owns the hotel is reading this so that you can do something about this once magnificent hotel, but if they just don't care, then it will be best if they just sell the business to someone who will.

Heart of the town

The hotel has an excellent location, walking distance to the Waterfront area. The rooms could do with a refurbishment, but the price is amazing. The staff are very friendly and professional. The breakfast is excellent value. It was perfect for my weekend stay in Kuching.

The hotel needs a renovation !

It was my first trip to Kuching with the family, couldn't believe the state of the 2 bedroom apartment! Carpets were stained at every corner, furniture and appliances are dated. For a 4 person acccomodation, they only provided 1 bath gel and 1 shower gel?! We needed to keep requesting from housekeeping for extra toiletries, toilet paper, towels and there was no bath math for the shower that would overflow. Even if you were on a Budget and wanted something central, don't be fooled because this 4-star hotel is not worth the stay. Better go to a newer 2-star or 3-star, plenty in the same area.

Though the location was great the apartment suite room condition was in poor maintenance: the kitchen had minuscule appliances/serve-ware/cutleries; broken kitchen dish drying rack; water/leak-stain in the carpets in living room and dining room (one of the living room stain was even still wet when we arrived); in the main master bedroom there's a mold-stained ceiling leak above the sink; leaky water taps; mold/blacken corking in all the bathrooms/sinks; some non-working light bulbs etc. Generally not maintained.

The hotel has seen glorious days but today it is a sad reminder of how not to run an establishment. Everything need a complete redo, though the quality of the finishing is good, like marble masonry. And solid furniture. Carpets, curtains, fixtures and aircon are all outdated and breaking down. Hope they can renovate this place soon.
