The White House Inn

We loved our stay! My cousin and I love to visit haunted locations so we landed here at The White House Inn. The Inn itself sits impressively on the hilltop looking out over the town. The interior of the Inn continues to display all the quaint features from its history including call bells in the halls, the old safe in the basement (that Clara reportedly made one of her workers go into and left him for dead as she thought he was stealing from her) and the beautiful wood trim work. We opted for room 6 as it reportedly had some Haunted history and the more haunted room 9 wasn’t available. Our room was large with 2 queen beds that were very comfortable. The updated bathroom had a lovely tiled shower and the water was definitely hot enough for showering. A highlight was the huge balcony! There were a lack of outlets bedside so plan accordingly. There was no ice bucket or phone system (no front desk after 8 or 9 pm), no elevator that I noticed, and no mini fridge so keep these things in mind. Although, we did not have any notable haunted happenings we did enjoy our quick overnight stay very much! Based on TA reviews we did not dine here and instead visited places in town. We did sit at the bar and have a drink. Service was quite slow as there was only one bartender and most patrons were also having dinner. Make sure to check out the basement during your stay. We were disappointed we were u able to see the secret staircase. This would definitely have been a highlight.

The inn has an old world flair but without looking dated. Very cozy atmosphere with the fireplace in the dayroom. Our room was spacious, the bed was very comfy. Nice towels. The breakfast was ok, they offered fresh fruit and good coffee. Liked the restaurant on site but… quite expensive.

Bathroom was not great- needs update. No shower pressure.

The inn keeper and other staff are super friendly and helpful! The location and the view from the house is great! I also enjoyed a lovely osso buco at the onsite restaurant.

The general cleaning in the public area can be improved given the weather. Ideally the snow and salt stain on the nicely preserved hardwood and carpet get cleaned off more promptly.

Building was beautifully maintained over the years. The beds were incredibly plush.

The breakfast was pretty meager for the price of the room (which was quite high). When I pay nearly $600 for a room, I think it’s reasonable to expect a hot breakfast. When we arrived at 9 am for breakfast, we were told it was impossible to bring out any more eggs, even though we were told that breakfast was served until 9:30. (So is it served until 9:30 or not?). The attitude of the staff was “sorry, you snooze, you lose”. It’s not like it’s a Marriott with 100s of guests….they know how many guests are there and thus how much food to prepare! Then a refusal to print out a receipt at checkout. The building is beautiful but the staff needs to get some basic customer service skills. Like saying “you’re welcome” after I thanked them and said goodbye. I guess I just got the Gen Z dismissal as a Karen.

This was a beautiful property with excellent staff. They were informative, kind, and willing to help in every way. We will be returning very soon. We are very happy we found this gem.
