"Great low budget place to stay in Melbourne CBD"

8.0

Location is great, - one can reach it from the airport by SkyBus to Southern Cross Station and from there by a free city tram, (Spring St/Bourke St #9 stop in 150 m) - just around the corner. Hotel occupies almost whole building, - nothing on Ground floor, rooms on 1 and 2 floors and a little kitchen on the roof. I guess it is important to say what means "shared bathroom" in this case. I was on the 1st floor, where there are 2 showers with WC + 2 separate showers + 2 separate toilets + 4 sinks. My floor had like 18 rooms. I stayed for 15 nights and never had a situation when all the bathrooms would be occupied. Bathrooms are cleaned daily around 9 AM. Roof kitchen has lots of plates, frying pen and pen, salt and some other spices are provided for free. Washing machine and drying machine are coin-operated. Next to the kitchen there are 2 tables with benches, where one can enjoy company of birds. Corridors and two showers with WC are always illuminated and monitored with CCTV cameras. My room had a quiet refrigerator, portable vent and an electric heater, table, a comfortable chair, 2 lamps several hangers and a shelf for hats. There also was a kettle with 2 ceramic cups and teabags. I can't say WIFI was the greatest in the universe, but most of the time it worked well. I definitely recommend this place.

The most difficult part was the early mornings. This hotel is just across a narrow street from Sheraton, where around 5 AM starts delivery time and tracks drive in and out a little street right in front of the Budget City Hotel. I had to wake up at certain time so I could not use earbuds, and these tracks were bothering me. At the end I realised that the best strategy was to just wake up with the first track, close the window and go back to sleep. If street noises can wake you up easily, you may try booking the rooms which do not face the Lt Collins street, - some rooms face a little inner light well which should be way quieter. And if it might be possible to have bathrooms cleaned like 2 times a day instead of one, and a better internet, this place would have earned immediately a much higher rating, I guess.

"Can't wait to go back, but PLEASE fix your running water problem."

8.0

Been there many times and know what to expect.

When it was 100 degrees outside, it would to have nice to have some AC!! My NUMBER 1 complaint is that they still have not fixed the leaking water in the sinks and showers. Tons of wasted water!!!

"Great location and good price point"

7.0

Great location, close to public transport, restaurants and bars. The communal areas are nice with the bathrooms generally tidy. Staff was friendly and we were also able to store our luggage at reception before and after check-in. The bed was super comfy. Overall, pretty reasonable for the price and considering we were out most of the day and evening, it did the job as a place to sleep.

Unfortunately the room wasn't super clean when we checked in, and there wasn't room service/anywhere to empty our trash and recycling. There is no air-con in the room, only a desk fan, however there were some pedestal fans available. Although this wasn't a big concern for us, it should also be noted that it isn't accessible, with only stairs, no lifts.
