Gilpin Hotel & Lake House

The hotel has a Michelin star and the food was exceptional. The staff were all friendly and helpful and the setting was attractive.

In our bedroom it took ages for the water in the hand basin to run hot. We asked to have the duvet changed for sheets and blankets andit should have been done while we were at dinner but it wasn't. We had to ask again and we were provided with one very light coverlet and no sheet, which was just not adequate. Breakfast was not included because we booked through booking.com instead of directly with the hotel. It would have cost us £25.00 each so we did without. The hotel is situated a long way up a narrow lane, so not the easiest place to find, and when we left the road was closed so we had too negotiate an even narrower lane to get back to the lake.

The food at both restaurants was excellent.

There was a discretionary charge for staff, including grounds staff on the final bill. Breakfast was not included "because we had booked via Booking.com!"

From staff to room, everything about this place was fantastic!

Thought SOUCE would have been better, dishes tasted lovely, presentation was on point, staff were friendly, but maybe because I’m restaurateur I see the little bits. All in all I’d give it 6.8/10
