Backwater Ripples Kumarakom

What an absolutely stunning property nestled right on the serene banks of the majestic Vembanad Lake! Every moment here felt magical. The staff were so warm and courteous, making me feel completely at home. The food was simply divine, special thanks to Chef Anand Prasad, whose genuine passion for food shone through in every bite! A big shoutout to Sijo, the wonderful naturalist who led us on that unforgettable canal boat ride, truly worth every penny. And heartfelt thanks to Ms. Sindhu for her brilliant suggestion of exploring village life by small boat, it was an experience I’ll cherish forever! Watching the intricate crafts of rope and mat making, and witnessing the age-old tradition of toddy tapping, was like stepping into a living piece of Kerala’s heritage. One suggestion though, the bar list was a downer. Though the wine options were many, only one option was available.

We were a family of six traveling through Kerala for two weeks — four of whom were 75, 85, 86, and 87 years old. We absolutely loved our stay in Kumarakom at Backwater Ripples, where we spent three nights and four wonderful days. From the moment we arrived, the entire staff made us feel welcome Everyone went out of their way to help with anything we needed, always with a smile. A special mention to Indraja at the front desk, who was ever smiling and incredibly attentive and patient with all of our parents’ needs. A 100+ star (not just 5*) shout-out to Sijo, who made our stay unforgettable. Every morning, he took us birdwatching for three hours, sharing his deep knowledge and passion. He also gave us a fascinating, hands-on introduction to toddy making — from tapping the sap to collecting and fermenting it. He introduced us to a local toddy farmer from a long line of skilled tappers, who demonstrated the traditional tools used to cut and pound the flower bud and collect the sap in the kuruka. We even tasted the toddy before and after fermentation. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience. One of my favorite moments was when Sijo brought us to the staff canteen, where we enjoyed idli and sambar with the hotel team. The food was delicious, and we felt deeply honored to mingle with everyone. It was a lifetime experience!!! I also had an exceptional spa treatment with Sethu Laxmi — her skill and technique were outstanding. She truly has gifted hands.It was calming and relaxing and she knew just the right amount of massage pressure followed by potli. So relaxing!!! We were given the best rooms overlooking Vembanad Lake. The rooms were spacious, peaceful, and full of tea/coffee. Each evening, we were delighted with sweet treats delivered to our rooms. The outdoor tea, coffee, and snack service was lovely. The complimentary boat ride on the lake was fantastic, and the evening musical programs were calm and soothing — perfectly set against the breeze and the water. Breakfast was an abundant buffet with fresh dosa and eggs made to order. We opted for the breakfast-and-dinner plan and were able to order anything we wished for dinner. The food was consistently excellent. Karthika was especially patient and kind, explaining menu details to our parents as many times as needed. We want to come back!!!! 🌿✨

Worth a visit just for sitting and feeling the breeze coming off the Vembanand lake. A well run resort with warm and friendly staff in attendance. Particular thanks goes to Sindhu Nair who makes it a point to converse with her guest and ensure they are well taken care of. We had a room with a garden view. Excellent facilities and a wonderful housekeeping team. Staff come from all over India and we enjoyed our conversations. Many are English speaking The pool was excellent. A small gym but adequate-everything was in working order. We particularly enjoyed the tea kadai (shop) every afternoon where we savoured local Indian cakes, sweet and savoury by the lake. The food in the restaurant was good. A decent range of foods were on offer and they were open to meeting individual preferences. There are several complementary activities on offer and others that can be arranged for a fee. It is a place that we returned to when our holiday plans changed, so that says it all.
