The George & Horn near Newbury

Very Noisy. The 3 Bedrooms we booked for our stay were just above the bar downstairs and there was no way of getting to sleep until 11:29pm when the noise finally went quiet.. Then people walking around upstairs (above us) woke two of us at around 4am along with someone knocking at the pub front door to be let in. The kettle was unusable when we looked inside it and plenty of dust on the tv and under the bed base (the bedding seemed clean and ok). Carpet leading up to the rooms was very old and grubby from years of use. unfortunately not a place I would recommend or stay again. Staff were friendly and polite though.

I have stayed at the George and Horn many times over the past few years. It has varied between excellent and very average. My last stay was rather spoiled by two things. They have stopped doing any food at all. This includes breakfast, so the lady recommended another pub or the 'shops in the village' as a good place to eat. I ate at the Crown, which was wonderful. The other issue was that macerator in the bathroom which went off every five minutes throughout the night, and, added to the noise from the bar, made sleeping rather difficult. It's a lovely village, and the people are friendly, but as a place to stay it lacks the basics really. Always very good value for money though and after all, that is sometimes what counts. though

Staff friendly but restaurant service was very slow due to staff shortage. The room allocated for us was of poor standard and requires updating specially the shower/toilet room, also it was directly above the bar which did not stop the loud noises until just before 12:00 midnight

The only downside to this stay was don't have rooms 2 and 3 as it's right above the bar and is very noisy while it was open, on the plus side the evening meal and breakfast was amazing. Despite this i would definitely stay here again but ask for a room in the court yard

Met by a man who did not smile once whilst checking us in. He then only issued 3 rooms and I had to tell him we had booked 4. Property is in overall poor condition with broken windows, window left open during heavy rain resulting in soaking wet carpet room smelt very musty. Could not fully close window and despite attempting to get a drink at 11.05 Pm I was refused yet underneath our bedroom they were playing loud music with speakers right below us and drinking until after 2.30am. Was not made to feel welcome at all. Breakfast took ages as only 1 lady available to both take orders and then cook breakfast. Would not recommend this property to anyone and certainly would not return.

Staff was very friendly and accommodating food was excellent overhaul very pleasant stay

We stayed for one night only and as such it was excellent value for money. It would not suit for longer, very minimal furniture. Clean and comfortable. Good breakfast. Nice people

The stay was barely okay but that’s all. Biggest gripes are; a) The restaurant area felt greasy, it all needs a good clean. The bar area was similar with stained and grubby chairs. b) Very noisy in Room No. 2 as it’s above the bar. Loud background noise until closing time. The toilet had a free flowing water leak into the pan, as it’s a pumped waste pipe the loud rumble every few minutes was annoying. c) State of the room wasn’t good. The stool was again stained and grubby. No toilet roll holder. Sink didn’t hold water as plug ineffective. Worst of all though, if you did manage to fill the sink and then let the water go, the water flowed back up into the shower tray before slowly draining… With a proper funky smell as well! As you can tell, I wasn’t impressed by the Hotel, the staff were pleasant and helpful but the fixtures and fittings need attention.
