Hotel Deli River

Medan has very few redeeming features, being just the gateway to Sumatra's wilderness attactions, but if you have to stop there then Deli River Hotel is an oasis in a hell-hole! It's a hotel you really need to spend several days/nights in to get the most out of it. The grounds are gorgeous, and when you're floating in the lovely swimming pool, you can almost not notice you're in a noisy, polluted, chaotic city. Their associated travel company provided a very good vehicle and excellent driver for a two day trip we took to a specific area of interest south of Medan.

Wij waren hier na een bezoek aan Bukit Lawang. Rustgevend net buiten Medan, fijne kamers en faciliteiten. Echt een prima plek om, na alle indrukken, even tot rust te komen voor een volgend deel van de reis. Fijn personeel die met je mee denkt. Lekker gegeten ook!

We had a great stay at the Hotel Deli River! A refuge from the hectic traffic and activity of the neighborhood and the city. Rooms were comfortable, clean, quiet. Bed comfortable. The grounds are beautiful: well landscaped, gentle rolling hill to the pool and dining area. Complimentary breakfast was delicious: rich Sumatran coffee, eggs, plate of tropical fruit, freshly made juice, assortment of pastry and Indonesian treats. Breakfast was always a highlight. Never had a bad dinner. The staff were always very helpful, charming and fun. The neighborhood was fun to walk through during the day. Locals were very friendly and accepting. We took 2 tours which were arranged through the hotel, which were surprisingly costly, although very good. Deddy, one of our drivers, was exceptional. We would definitely stay at the Deli River again.

Ellie welcomed us with refreshing cold banana juice, suggested a dip in the pool and offered us swim towels. She also arranged a car to take us to the airport early the next morning as well as a packed breakfast. We enjoyed good Indonesian food at their Omlandia Restaurant.

Staff were friendly and went out of the way to help. But they don't have the regular reception so when one called the reception no, a less experienced staff may run off and ask another to help answer. They also had no reception and services after 9pm, only security guard. However before 9pm, they do try to accommodate your needs as much as they can, including bringing us tubs of ice cubes since there is no small fridge in the room. Good place for relaxing within the compound after a long drive such as from Lake Toba area.

This was an impulsive trip based on other traveller feedback and price.We left home with an open mind not knowing what to expect. What we found was a quiet oasis set back from a busy main street. The cottage was clean and spacious, the hotel staff were polite, helpful and friendly. There were toys in the Restaurant for little kids and a little play area in the garden. The restaurant menu was surprisingly large for such a small place. The owners personally checked that we were happy. We booked both airport transfer and a day trip through the hotel who organised a driver, guide and permits for us. Our driver was friendly and reliable, our guide was a lovely local man who spoke good English, carried our tired 4 year old on his back and took good care of us. After 2 days on the road in Sumatra, it was great to find an oasis of calm and tranquillity in Medan... The pool was nice.

Beautiful place, even better at nighttime. "Double" bed is just two singles pushed together though and the curtains were kind of see through which made it a bit difficult for or honeymoon stay :-P
