Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich

Location was great, close to everything, after the check in process the staff were great - super helpful with everything. Room was great & clean

On check in, the staff member tried to charge me an extra $1000 aud as a ‘deposit’ this was essentially the entire charge for the room for the week again which I was told was security for room service or laundry should I choose to use it. I find this a bit ridiculous as they had my credit card and passport on file.. when I pushed back the staff member was quick to reduce it which meant that it wasn’t really required if it could be so quickly decreased? I get a deposit has to be taken but for it to be the full reservation amount doubled with no prior notice on the confirmation is not a great start. I was also told no breakfast when I checked in when my reservation which had been confirmed clearly said breakfast included. Again when I pushed back the staff member quickly said ok 1x breakfast, there was 2 of us staying and standing there at the desk - so why would I just get one? Again when I contested it, he quickly changed and said ok 2 breakfasts. I don’t understand why I had to fight for what was included in my reservation?

I would like to share my honest experience so that anyone considering this hotel as a 5-star property does not make the same mistake I did. The hotel is poorly maintained. From the moment we entered the room, there was a strong musty smell. There were stains everywhere, and everything felt old and dusty. Our room, in particular, smelled strongly of kitchen odors to the point that my young daughter felt like vomiting during the night because of the smell. We could hardly wait to leave. When I reported the issue at reception, they only brought in an air-conditioning unit instead of offering us a different room. Also, the staff do not speak English at all. When I checked out and gave my feedback, the receptionist simply looked at me, nodded, and said “sorry.” That was the entire response. We would not recommend this hotel to anyone. It was a huge disappointment. There are many, many, many better options available.

Everything was exceptional, from facility to costumer care and down to neatness of the place. Everything was spot on and staff very friendly and receptive

The room was spacious and clean. The staff were very polite and helpful; although we occasionally experienced some language barriers, everything was resolved smoothly in the end.
