"Never Again: Avoid if you can"

2.0

Dear potential traveler BEWARE I just returned from staying at Hacienda del Cielo on 6/21 with a friend-we are both well traveled and speak Spanish proficiently. We discussed our stay, and since we stayed in 5 places in Nicaragua (as well as spending time in India, Thailand, Jamaica, Panama, etc), I thought to share a very honest review of this Lodge. We did not really like our stay if I am honest. Especially for the price point as I’ve stayed in hostels with more attention do detail. 1) we were it was 1 hour from the airport and it really is more like 90-115 minutes of shuttle travel. I don’t know how an hour could be an accurate estimation. A new law has passed cutting the speed limit in half however we should have been told other wise it would have made more sense to just start flying back from the airport especially considering the rooms many deficiencies 2)the room had many deficits for a traveler A) no potable water in the room if we got thirsty at night B)fridge did not work and smelled bad C) TV did not work D)we were told there was hot water when we definitely did not get any hot water for showers 3) it was not mentioned tips would be added at the end (over 25% of the incidentals were tax and tip) however we already had left tips for driver and spa worker as well. This was sneaky by my estimation. And he also made it seem since we had traveled through the country at other places we should just know this addition of tax/tip but all of the other accommodations already add it in. 4)the spa treatment for $125 the cheapest products were used and my body and especially face have broken out with acne and clogged pores. (I visit spas all over the world so I know quality vs a cheap synthetically perfumed papaya body butter with sugar in it for a ‘scrub’”).Additionally the treatment room was very chilly to be laying there naked with oil on your body 5) we were asked if we wanted anything upon arrival, such as rum, cola, etc and my travel partner said yes that would be great yet no one ever delivered her rum 6)we were under the impression after asking specifically about the shuttle if it was included and the owners communication gave impression it was included only to be hit with $130 (plus tax and tip) charge. Now, we stayed at 5 places across Nicaragua and this one under delivered in nearly all aspects AND was the most expensive: one room, basic dinner, no alcohol, 2 body scrub/massages, shuttle, came to $381 plus TAX &TIP was an additional nearly $500 plus the $200 room. In 20 days hours we spent $700. And I’ve stayed anywhere from luxury to rustic but this pricing was insanity. Now I am not a keyboard warrior hiding behind my phone. I reached out directly to the owner who is in Miami to give him an opportunity to make some amends. I explained all the other places we stayed at already told us and factored in any gratuity and tax as to not be gobsmacked when receiving the final bill. His overall sentiment was this: 1)he can’t always be on premises 2)if we felt we over paid in tips he would refund us $38 in tips (but I don’t want to take away from the locals), he also proceeded to say how he doesn’t need to steal because he owns some yacht business in Miami and sent me that website which didn’t make me feel seen or heard, 3) he assured that the workers were supposed to deliver a welcome drive, check the TV, hot Water, and tell us the sink water in the bathroom is potable but “oopsie!” They must Have forgot or maybe they were being lazy-he wasn’t sure.. These are big item to just leave out and it ruined our stay as I was up all night thirsty and my friend likes TV for white noise to fall asleep. He made no attempt to rectify anything else with terms of a partial refund as we went without any amenities. Also, as another issue as pointed out was we weren’t given any list of activities because once you are in the puertas of hacienda del cielo, you can’t really leave so it’s imperative they anticipate your needs. They most certainly did not. Again I have been traveling for 20 years through jungles and developing countries but I do feel as a fellow person in the hospitality who also runs a airbnb in Costa Rica and works in restaurant sector, that our experience at hacienda was beyond very disappointing. We wish we would have just waited at the airport. To anyone considering this spot please ask any and all questions upfront and I’d make sure the owner is present. If you can’t do that make sure whoever is working can check your room amenities. If you are on a time crunch be advised it is nearly a 4 hour round trip ride from the airport. Sincerely Brit Puste

"expecting more"

4.0

The lodge is very rustic and basic. it has a very pretty view of the natural reserve, although we weren’t given any information on what else there was to do such as hiking trails or anything? aside from the view, the room itself was in need of some attention- we did not have hot water in the shower. Our television did not work. The mini fridge did not work. We weren’t given any bottled water. (you should not drink the water in Nicaragua) staff was accommodating & the host was easy to reach, but in the end we were forced to pay a large tax & tip (on top of tips we had already gave in cash) this was 1 of 4 places we stayed in Managua and the corn islands- It was the most expensive with the least amenities. * Also important to note -the shuttle service they offer charges $65 each way and will take over an hour each way.

"Unmatched views and service"

10.0

Unmatched views and service. The hotel is stunning . Our room opened right up to the pool. I have never stayed at a hotel where the staff was so helpful and accommodating. Do not miss the sunset as it the sun goes down over the volcano. Have a couple drinks, relax in the pool. Food was great There is a cow named sky on the property, he is just like a giant puppy - just wants Love and cuddles.

"Escape to Nature"

10.0

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful stay and will definitely be back! The rooms are very comfortable and have everything that you need, the pool is great and wraps around the property, giving you beautiful views of Volcan Masaya and Laguna de Masaya from all directions and the food was wonderful as well! We really enjoyed our conversation with JC and he was very quick at responding when we set up our reservation as well. The staff also were very attentive, friendly, and helpful. We also arranged spa treatments and Evelin was amazing. I only wish we had stayed two nights so we could’ve spent a full day at the pool one day as well.

"A beautiful place to visit!"

10.0

We loved our stay at Hacienda Puerta del Cielo! Don Juan and his staff were so hospitable and gave us such a warm welcome when we arrived. The casita was gorgeous and the bed and pillows were very comfortable. The views are beyond comparison and we had breakfast overlooking the Laguna Masaya with Volcan Masaya in the distance. Took a dip in the pool after, which similarly had amazing views. We highly recommend staying here if you get the chance!
