"A wonderful ryokan close to a very nice town"

I went with my wife and my parents in law. The room was fantastic, very wide, one room with futons and another one with beds, there were several onsen (some in the same building and another crossing the street), and in the room there was a tub and a japanese style shower. If you choose you can have a Japanese breakfast and dinner in the hotel. The hotel is close to Takayama Old Town.

The amount of food seems excessive to me for both breakfast and dinner; I know it's part of the experience to taste the course, but I would recommend having options to choose from.

"Ryokan with exceptional friendly service"

We have experience in staying at several ryokan in Takayama on our previous trips to Japan. One particular ryokan that is worth mentioned is this Kachoan ryokan. We were greeted and received by a friendly staff at the bus station. Upon entering the ryokan, the super friendly and very hands-on owner, Eriko Arisu, greeted us. We were brought to our room to check-in by the friendly Khun. We were pleasantly surprised to receive a nice souvenir, a hand-written card and photo for our wedding anniversary. Our room was spacious with a huge jacuzzi. The breakfast was exceptional with attentive to every detail. A big thank you to this beautiful ryokan that made our stay very memorable.

"Dated and too structured"

Traditional hotel with dated rooms. Food is very much Japanese food even with the western options. That was probably the first big issue. We were served dinner without discussion and we couldn’t eat a lot of it. Hot bath in the room is tap water sadly. We hoped it would be onsen water. We dont enjoy naked bathing with strangers and had hoped the private bath would escape the issue. Beds are futon style as per tradition but very uncomfortable for a big guy. Lighter members of the family seemed to manage. Most of the positive reviews are from couples so the romance probably overcame the discomfort.

"Pleasant well located ryokan."

A pleasant but dated ryokan. Room was spacious but minimalist with some very dated furniture. Beautiful woodwork in rooms. We opted for comfortable western bed. Dining is private. Excellent and varied menu. A bit regimented as we were met with some limited flexibility about timing. Overall service was very attentive. Reception needs more slipper alternatives. Could not find the right fit. Great location in beautiful town.
