Fairfield by Marriott Sapporo

Location. Cleanliness. Breakfast. Staff attitude. Secure.

Room size too small for the charges levied. TV has very limited channels. Only one restaurant which was also only active during daytime. No hotel bar. Check out time 11AM.

When booked I thought the price was ~$280 AUD and included breakfast but when turned up to pay cost us $400 AUD + ~$55 AUD for breakfast. I was confused that price had risen since I booked.

The Sapporo Fairfield Marriott was Centrally located, comfortable, and served as a great base hotel for our vacation in the Sapporo area.

Pretty solid

Good room size. Very clean. Good location.

The hotel’s thermostat was completely fake! I woke up drenched in sweat, thinking I was getting sick, only to realize the temperature gauge was misleading, showing 10-20°F cooler than the actual room temperature. I almost went to see a doctor before finding out that the room temperature was centrally controlled by the hotel. This was frustrating and misleading, and I’ll definitely be sharing my experience on travel review sites. Thankfully, I switched to other hotels in the area that offered a better experience. I’ve stayed at every type of Marriott, from small-town locations in Iowa to the Ritz in Tokyo, but this was by far the most off-brand Marriott experience I’ve encountered. The staff seemed mostly indifferent, and there was rarely anyone at the front desk who spoke English. While I understand that English speakers may be limited in Japan, it was still disappointing. The only exception was Ruben, who was fluent in English, genuinely helpful, and honest—truly a bright spot in an otherwise poor experience. We moved to the Solaria Hotel for the same rate, and it was a vast improvement. Upon checking out, I discovered the thermostat issue was real and confirmed by the staff: it doesn’t actually control the temperature, which is managed centrally. I also learned the hotel was recently acquired by Marriott, and it clearly has a long way to go before it meets the brand’s usual standards.

Clean & tidy

Location wise, this is a good place to stay. The hotel is literally 1 min away from Nijo Market as well as the start of Tanukikoji shopping street. The nearest subway stop is Susukino Station which is about 8 mins walk away. Or if you prefer to walk, Sapporo Main station is 22 mins away. Hotel is clean and nicely furnished. Only peeve I have is that even as a Platinum member, they only allow me to check-out at 2pm instead of 4pm.
