"Repas traditionnel, Onsen, service au top"

8.0

"Great Onsen Experience Nearby Osaka"

10.0

This ryokan is located in Arima, which is about 1 hr bus ride from Umeda Station in Osaka. When I arrived at the bus stop terminal, I used the payphone inside the bus station to call Gekkouen Yuugetsusansou for a pickup. I believe there is only one person in the Front Desk who knows how to speak English, so if someone else pick up the phone, just state which bus stop / train stop you are at and they will probably understand you. For me, I just said "hankyu bus stop, pick up" and they understood me and the shuttle arrived in 10 min. When I was looking at the Gekkouen website, the room reservation was in Japanese. Therefore, I booked the room through Rakuten Travel (in English) and selected a dinner and breakfast plan. NOTE: there were several plans stating "dinner and breakfast plan" and each plan with different prices. I selected the cheapest dinner and breakfast package for Friday night and messaged the ryokan to confirm whether my plan included is a kaiseki dinner. (I really wanted to try a kaiseki dinner). It took them a few days to reply but they did confirm it included a kaiseki dinner. A month later, I changed my booking from a Friday night to a Sunday night due to a change in my Japan itinerary. Again, I selected the cheapest room package and reasonably thought I would also get a kaiseki dinner. Unfortunately, upon my arrival at 1 pm, they said my booking included a buffet dinner and breakfast. I thought I had a kaiseki dinner and they said the hotel was full and they did not have any more rooms with kaiseki even though I was willing to pay a surcharge. (I showed them my email records stating I thought I would get a kaiseki dinner.) Fortunately, they were very accommodating and they told me to walk around the town and see what they can do by 3 pm when the check-in time starts. By 3ish pm, I went back to the hotel to check-in. They said they were able to get me to a room with keiseki dinner with a surcharge of $45 CAD for 2 people. (I think it was only $35 CAD more than my original Friday night booking with kaiseki..) I was really happy with their services. After I checked in, I explored they hotel and tried all 3 female onsen. Personally, I like the open-aired onsen because it is less stuffy. They also have 3 additional private onsen at a surcharge. The onsen experience was very relaxing. The kaiseki dinner was excellent. I had a 11 course meal and the food presentation was good. I tried many different types of dishes that I have never tasted in Canada. My room is a Japanese-style room. The room itself looks a bit dated. I was sleeping on a futon. After the kaiseki dinner, when they set my bed, they only placed 2 futons on it and it was not very comfortable. However, I found 4 more futons in the cupboard, so when she left, I placed 2 more futons/person and it was decent. There were no wifi in the room and they said they have wifi in the main lobby. Unfortunately, I had trouble connecting to their wifi in the main lobby with my android phone and my IPad. The breakfast buffet was ok. I am not a big fan eating rice and fish for breakfast.... However, they do have bread, yogurt, jello, egg, etc.. for breakfast. The downtown core of Arima is small and there is nothing much you could do. However, the onsen and kaiseki dinner experience was great. Services are excellent, no matter the people who work in the Reception or the one who was serving food. My only tip is to book a room with kaiseki dinner. If you are booking through an English website, DO MAKE SURE WHICH DINNER PACKAGE you are booking. They do provide buffet/kaiseki options.

"Authentic ryokan / onsen exp, dinner is a let down"

6.0

Booked an overnight stay at the Ryokan as we were passing through from Osaka, which was my husband's first stay at a ryokan. We picked the 10 mat japanese style room, and the room was very spacious including closed balcony area with some seats. We topped up to include dinner service and breakfast, as I wanted my husband to experience a full ryokan experience with in-room dining. However, considering the price we paid, the quality of the kaiseki dinner, while pretty to look at, was rather lacking somewhat in standard to someone accustomed to fine japanese food. We did however opt to book a private family onsen, of which the hotel offers 3 choices - 1 partially open air, and 2 closed ones. We picked the "wine" one - water was literally the colour of red wine, and a good soak. Plenty of other free onsens to try out - some covered, and some outdoor. Only other thing to be mindful is the hotel is rather dated (but still clean), but if you don't mind that, it does make for an authentic ryokan / onsen experience. Far more intimate experience than larger onsen hotels i've tried in Hokkaido. Only reason why rating is lower is because of quality of kaiseki given the price point.

"If you like quiet..."

Location a little bit far but this is also the advantage for having a better environment. Have wandered around to check out other hotels, but likely i will still choose this one if coming back.
