"Why would you pay more to stay somewhere else?"

8.0

I was paying for this myself, so I was willing to compromise a little on the cosmetics. The Algonquin met our needs for less than the others, making it a clear winner to me. One long flight of stairs to get to the second floor. The band playing downstairs was quite good; we had a couple of beers while enjoying them. Next time we're in the Soo we'll be staying at the Algonquin!

"Never again"

2.0

The music from the bar on the main floor was heard in our room until it closed in the am. The three flights of stairs to our room was not good for my ailing mother. We did not have access to a shower nor tub, just a sink in our room and toilet that was shared and accessible from the hall. We did not have a TV in our room. The electrical cover was missing from the electrical cover at the head of our bed that has contact with the blankets. The fire stop door was not tight, there is a hole in the door at the bottom right, therefore it isn't a safe closure. We never felt safe and also shared our room with a beautiful spider.

"Good location, nice staff but it's a hostel type"

2.0

It wasn't clear the hotel was a hostel type, shared bathroom, etc. No air conditioning service. I couldn't sleep the entire night, the room was just too warm, plus the window locks don't work. Safety issues there. No elevators. Overall, a sketchy hotel. Expedia should make this clear on their site that this hotel is a cheap hostel type.

"Run. Run like the wind in the opposite direction."

2.0

What a flop house. It shouldn't be legal to operate a hotel like this. There was club music shaking the hotel and thumping until 2 am. Could not sleep. You will not have your own bathroom and will have to walk down an odd smelling, stained carpeted hallway that leads to okay bathrooms. Our room had a small sink that I sense doubles as a urinal. If you want a peaceful nights sleep run in the other direction. Their focus is clearly on making money at their bar and not giving you a clean, comfortable stay.

"Spend the extra $40 and stay somewhere else!"

2.0

Wow, this hotel is in serious need of upgrades. It's essentially a 1940s boarding house with wood-laminate floors added in a few years ago. Our two rooms each had one double bed, and we're joined with the bathroom which had an ancient soaker tub (that was the best part of the whole place) and a toilet. Sinks were in the bedrooms. No cups for drinking water. We were there on a warmish evening in August, and the rooms were incredibly stuffy and hot, with no air conditioning. One room had a tabletop fan, and we asked at the front for another for the other room, which thankfully they had. The worst part was the the double bed I slept on had a queen-sized headboard and a twin-sized frame and box spring. Sleeping anywhere near the edges of the mattress caused us to uncomfortably slip over the side. Room keys are actual keys, and they require a $20 cash deposit for each. When we checked out, it took ages in the back room for the fellow at the desk to find our deposit. There was not one request as to whether our stay had been comfortable. Presumably they know their hotel well enough to not bother asking. Seriously, spend the extra $40 and stay somewhere else. You're worth it.

Disappointing place, don't stay here. Seems like a homeless shelter. Loud arguments from other rooms, common bathrooms are in poor condition. Doesn't seem that this hotel is intended for tourists or travellers.

Elegant Living area in our suite with charming woodwork details of an era gone by. Affordable downtown site.
