"First Time Canadian Couples Retreat from Canada"

6.0

The resort is immense, impressive and will keep anyone happy for likely the entirety of their stay. We had some troubles with the room that were not address in a timely or satisfactory manner. Ended up wasting 3/7 days of our stay unable to settle into our room. Then we were offered spa services at a discount for compensation, which meant spending more to take advantage of their "compensation". Spa is really overpriced but you do get access to many facilities. The 4 resorts in this area look like they are one big area to explore but they are separate. We were pressured on multiple occasions to spend more money. Either on the spa, to become a "family" member or paid add ons. However the free things we werent made aware of such as al-a-carte restaurants to book for or what shows would be playing on which nights. App is horrible but it's all you have for looking up times of restaurants and locations of times. Google maps helps sometimes. Wifi is pretty spotty so download maps when you can. When we came on Jan 9th there was still christmas things in the app so we couldn't tell what was going on and felt like we missed out planning some night life activities. Staff weren't the greatest at letting us know everything that was going on. This could've been due to a language barrier. Would of been nice to have a pamplet or something. We were woken up to a phone call in our room multiple times. To tell us to check in with our tour guide. I feel like this could've been done in a different way, considering we were at the lobby multiple times to sort out room issues. Also we booked Xel-HA through our nexus tour guide only to find it possibly cheaper to book directly through the Xcaret website itself. The food was amazing. Great variety. We ended up trying the breakfast in the white sands resort and it was even better. It was a bit confusing to find out what food was where and when but that was part of the adventure. If we were coming again, we would definitely have a better time. Won't be coming back to this resort because of how things are unclearly separated but would love to stay with collonial at another location.

"Not 5* but a very decent and comfortable 4*"

8.0

Hard to write a review for this hotel. There is a lot to like, the pool area, some of the restaurants, the food generally, staff and sports facilities are very good indeed. But the room we had was very tired and had things falling apart (the toilet seat broke completely, but was replaced quickly). Having said that the bed was comfortable and the room large. We were in block Villa 6 which has no view to speak of and is quite a walk from the main restaurnts, lobby etc. (Not a probloem for us, but might be for others). The staff are overall very good, drinks service was a little slow in Gran Azul, and a big difference in the quality of the cocktails in different bars, moreso than I would have expected. The a la carte restaurants varied a lot. The Brasilian and the Steak House were excellent, the Italian and Mexican, very disappointing. The interior designer needs a stiff talking to. The restaurants are full of hard surfaces, which means the sound bounces around making them very noisy and difficult to have a conversation in. The gym and sports courts are very good, however, there was some kind of Pickle thing going on for much of our stay which meant we only got to play pickle once, which was a shame. Our big moan is the whole 'us and them' thing going on. We didn't really understand where we could go and where we couldn't and to be honest, it really doesn't feel good to be in that situation. Having said that, we went pretty much everywhere we wanted to go, without a problem, so not sure we really understand the whole set up. Perhaps we didn't try to go anywhere we weren't allowed, but were conscious of it all the time. We seem to get served branded spirits in some bars and not in others, which we didn't really understand. Overall, a really nice holiday, if you are looking for a top notch 5* experience, you will be disappointed, but if you want a reasonably priced, good 4* experience, like us, you will be very happy. But get rid of this 2 tier system Grand Palliadium, it's not a good look.

"The most OK resort you should probably scroll past"

6.0

I would say that this place has so much potential but it seems like it can’t get out of its own way with horrific food, subpar service, and shotty rooms. Additionally, it’s a massive labyrinth that requires a ton of walking or waiting for shuttles (that nearly run you over if you dare walk). Below are more specifics. First of all, and most annoying, getting a reservation at one of the restaurants is nearly impossible without waiting in a huge line in the lobby for an hour. All of them book fast. Luckily I got to eat at all of them by waking up super early and getting in line. Unfortunately, only one of them was half decent (Brazilian steakhouse). The others were just seemingly iterations of the buffet food which was AWFUL. No exaggeration the worst buffet food I’ve ever had. Food that looked to be sitting out for a long time, with no flavor. I also suspect they are not making all the food fresh daily. Often times things tastes soggy and were very obviously reheated. Regarding service, I assume the workers are being paid low wages. This would at least explain the complete lack of urgency from any worker here. I waited on average 10-15 mins for a high chair for every meal. If you have a small child you know how horrific dinner was afterwards. There were often empty pans of food that had not been replaced. I often had to flag waiters down for a refill of water. Most of the staff was friendly, but on many occasions I felt like I was intruding to ask questions as I was responded to as if I had just asked for a kidney. For as many kind workers I encountered, there were just as many, if not more, rude ones. Additionally, when they cleaned our room, I noticed that they were taking our wet bath towels and simply refolding them. We figured this out quickly as we never had a dry towel after a shower moving forward from the first day. The rooms also have this weird eco-function where the lights and AC shut off after a certain time. Super annoying. My room also had a massive leak in the middle of the night and I nearly moonwalked ten feet using the bathroom in the middle of the night. The pool was gorgeous, but again, the subpar service was blaring. They serve every drink in plastic cups to recycle, which is great. Not so great, is that they hound you to finish quickly, often taking cups the second you put them down. Additionally, they have less towels than they do people. So often times you are either waiting for one or don’t have one to dry off. With these inefficiencies, some of the staff seem to make their own ad hoc rules for further efficiency. Some days you couldn’t have more than three towels at a time, two drinks at a time, etc. However, as it was clearly ad hoc, it really just felt like chaos. Overall, what I think is happening here is that they are cutting corners to save money and it’s very obvious. Whether it’s not changing towels while cleaning the rooms, speed recovering recycled cups, under supplying towels, not maintaining the rooms, or rationing pastries (literally). It wants to give luxury vibes but just can’t with how it’s ran. This is a gorgeous hotel with immaculate views. However, the good here is overpowered by the laziness, inefficiency, and rationing. With a commitment to better food and efficiency, this place could be a real diamonds. Until then, it’s like IKEA furniture-looks great on the outside, but falls apart once you open the drawers. If there are better options, take them. You get what you pay for. We thought we were getting luxury at a bargain when we saw the pictures and price points. It’s scenic, but that’s about it. Everything seemed hard. I have a 1 and 5 year old and would not come here if you have small kids.

"DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!"

2.0

DO NOT STAY HERE!!! HORRIBLE. super far from everything- you have to walk 20 min to get to an actual spot on the beach, cockroaches infesting the lobby which they don’t care about, can’t book à la cart for the first 3 days of your stay- which they do not tell you till you get there; buffet is horrible, à la cart has the WORST food i’ve ever tried (some how they messed up edamame) and there’s like 4 options per menu. “beach side” you pay extra for has ZERO beach view, because of all the trees, not easily accessible AT ALL- there’s like a million super TALL stair bridges. Check in took like an hour even though there was NO LINE. One time, we showed up to a restaurant and asked if there was 3 available seats at a table; they told us to wait, only for the next guy who asked the same thing they LET IN IMMEDIATELY??? racism?? idk. any other resort would be better than this one. asked the front desk to send chips to the room, they said it would take 45 minutes, waited 2 hours, chips never came. Sturdy water slides, I am 19 and weigh 110 pounds but they got mad when i tried to go on a slide (they were completely deserted). (kids only) Beach at white sand your not allowed to swim there, there’s no bar, and no washroom, so you have to walk ALL THE WAY DOWN to colonial beach (which is supposedly cheaper to stay there) Bro I genuinely have like 15 more things to add but i’m just gonna say DO NOT STAY HERE. AT BEST this is a 3 star hotel. Also saw RACOONS COMING FROM THE BEACHSIDE SEAFOOD RESTAURANT KITCHEN??? AND the door is nasty. I have attached photos.
