"Cool older hotel"

8.0

To enjoy the hotel you have to be in the right mindset. It’s an old mansion and everything is quirky, which is also what makes it great. It’s very well take care of for the age and it seems very authentic. I loved all the rich dark wood, fireplaces, paintings, etc… It’s a little inconvenient to get your luggage to the third floor as the elevator stops on two, but again it’s an old mansion, so that didn’t bother us. I didn’t give it 5 stars due to the room description, we stayed in a two room suite. From their website: “Our Deluxe lofts and Suites are both two floor suites with a living room area with a Queen size pull out sofa-bed as well as a King Size bed in the Master bedroom.” The wording very much implies there are two separate private rooms, especially with the “master bedroom” wording. In reality it’s two separate areas that have a small staircase between them. Really just one room on two levels. Most other hotels this would still be a junior suite not a one/two bedroom suite which is typically a separate private bedroom and living area. It’s not much different than their less expensive one room suites with a sleeper sofa, same space just spread across two floors, not any more private and somewhat less convenient as you have to go up a small flight of stairs to the bathroom. We’d stay again but in a different room type knowing what we do now.

"Terrible customer service at Manions on 5th in Shadyside."

2.0

Tried to reserve a spot for the Easter Brunch late February, the events person was "Out of the office for an extended time". No one else at the hotel was able to make a simple 2-person reservation. The phone message said to call back in a week, and I did. I got a call back with a time to reserve at about 1:30pm, by the time I called back the next day, I was told the table was taken. So I needed to wait for them for a week, but they couldn't wait a half a day for my response when I already said I wanted to reserve?? The Easter Brunch always fills up, so just waiting for my response would have been no skin off their nose, they simply didn't care. Terrible customer service, will never go to this place again.

"A bona fide mansion"

8.0

Recently enjoyed a one-night stay at the Mansions on Fifth, actually at the next-door Amberson House, not the main mansion. The home is 120 years old but has been well maintained and updated/renovated over the years, of course. It was cozy, quiet and comfortable. My only critique would be the staff itself, which could use a course in professionalism. No one was particularly personable or friendly, although we did not have a great deal of interaction with them. Just a bit off-putting.

"Wish we had found this before - but will surely be going back in the future!"

10.0

What a marvelous hotel. We can't believe that we hadn't come across this one before, but this was our first stay. First of all, the location was perfect for us. We visited the Phipps Conservatory, which is just a few minutes away. We also toured the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, again very close. For dinner, we walked over to "downtown" Shadyside and had an incredible meal at Girasole. Aside from that, the builings and grounds are impressive and impeccable. We live in a 1900's era Victorian home ourselves, and really appreciate the craftsmanship and feel of these historic, beautifully renovated structures. Last but not least, the price was extremely competitive, especially given the fact that we had a small suite with plenty of room.

"Needs cleaning"

I stayed in the adjacent home. Other than room needing to be cleaned, the house is ok. Staff is fabulous. Not worth the price I paid. Main home is much better.

"A Very Tired Hotel"

2.0

This hotel is as tired as it is old. Our lengthy check-in was excused by the need to make room keys. Once checked-in to our rooms, we needed to walk up and down flights of steps to the 3rd floor; there is no elevator access to the third floor and the down elevator from 2 to main was broken. There were no employees to assist with luggage up and down the many narrow steps. When we asked for bottled water, we were told the hotel has a vending machine in the basement but don't bother because it was broken. Breakfast is a $15 sandwich ordered the night before. This hotel requires a remake both in decor and service to restore old world charm and hospitality.

"Unexpected gem in Pittsburg"

10.0

This is a lovely former historic home of architectural significance that has been turned into a wonderful hotel. The details are left in place but there is nothing fussy. The staff are very customer oriented. It is close (walking distance) to Carnegie Mellon and Pitt as well as the museums. Alot of good looking restaurants along the way. Although you will want to save time to relax in the beautiful bar with a drink, a snack, and a welcoming setting.

"Exceptional"

This was the second time that I have stayed at the Mansions. It really is a charming and elegant home turned hotel. The rooms are clean. The staff are nice. And the parking is a great bonus. I look forward to my next trip to Pittsburgh!

"Good"

6.0

If the purpose of your trip is to be near CMU, this is a great hotel due to its proximity. For anything else, this is a very average hotel, unless you really love the old archaic mansion style. You get a good amount of room, but the space is not very high quality. The bathroom was old, very little light, and then furniture is quite old (again, if you like this kind of thing then this is great). Additionally, they somehow were not able to finish cleaning my room by 3pm (or at least they prioritized other rooms, even though it didn't seem like there were a lot of people staying at the time?), and so when I got back at 3:45pm (tired) I couldn't be bothered to wait for them to clean it. That's not terrible, but when I asked the front desk worker if the hotel could clean it by 3pm the next day, they said that they couldn't guarantee it, and ADDITIONALLY accused me that the only reason they didn't the day before was because I had put the "Do not disturb" sign on (which I definitely did not, they knew I hadn't put that up the prior day because they called me asking if I wanted it cleaned at around 5-6pm, to which I said no). To be clear, the issue wasn't so much that they missed the cleaning, it was what happened the next day. To summarize, a very average experience for a supposed "4-star hotel" (I would say it is much, much closer to a 3-star or even 2-star hotel in my experience).
