Hampton Inn Ottumwa

This is my second stay at this hotel and little things have annoyed me - the pool is closed due to maintenance, the ice machine on first floor in non-operational, a light is out in the bathroom, a sign welcoming HH guests (Diamond, Gold, Silver, etc) did not have my name (I'm at silver level). The hotel is close to Bridge View Center which is a convention/entertainment venue. Rooms are quiet, breakfast is normal fare - scrambled eggs, bacon, breakfast potatoes, toast, muffins, oatmeal, fruit, etc (no Belgian waffle maker). Although disappointed with some items, I will return should I attend an event at Bridge View Center.

It was a noce one night stay. The breakfast was good as well.

The water pressure in the shower was so bad that one couldn't get their hair shampooed and cleaned properly despite being the most expensive hotel in this small town

The pool was closed for maintenance while we were there. They would have contacted a neighboring hotel for us to use their pool but we decided against it. Breakfast was very good. Lots of variety. Staff very friendly. We enjoyed our stay and will return!

Mixed reviews on this place as it was recommended by locals for my trip to town for work purposes but I would say it was just average. Desk in my room was sticky, shower was a bit dirty, and the knob fell off the dresser the second I touched it. Tv channels were terrible. Pool was closed. Lobby furniture was a bit worn. Seems outdated with minimal maintenance. No air conditioning in hallways. Breakfast was decent. Staff were very nice. Despite all of its blemishes, and definitely not your typical Hilton, I would stay again for a quick overnight stop.

When we got off the elevators to the second floor, I could smell cigarette smoke. When we entered room 215, the smell of cigarettes was even worse. The smell was so bad that it leached onto our clothes and belongings. It was late, so I didn’t complain when I probably should have. I keep wondering how management and housekeeping could have overlooked this and rented out this room. The staff and property was fine otherwise, but if I ever come back through this town I’ll probably try the Holiday Inn next door instead.

We stayed at this hotel last night, and it was an odd experience. We were driving through Ottumwa in the morning and had a reservation there for that night, so I called ahead and asked if we could drop off our luggage to have it stored until we came back. To my surprise, the woman at the hotel I spoke with stated they did not have any place they could store our luggage! I did confirm that we would be there later in the day. When we arrived around 3 PM (with our luggage!), she could not make keys for our room or our daughter's room. She let us into our rooms and stated they would try to get us keys to our rooms. My daughter's room did not have a functioning main light bulb near the entrance. Later, she was able to get my dtr a room key, but we never got a room key to our room. We had to either leave it ajar, or have management go up to our 2nd floor room to let us in. I have never experienced this before. Also, I was informed my daughter's room light would be fixed in about 2 weeks. Eventually we were offered other rooms, but by then we were settled and decided not to move. The room itself was ok, breakfast was pretty good, staff were friendly. However, I wonder about whether management is doing what it needs to do to keep this place well-maintained. They knew we would be arriving about 4 hours early, and they could not put us in rooms that were in working order? The hotel had several floors, and there were about 10 cars in the parking lot. There must have been multiple open rooms. Where they all not working properly? If so, why not close the hotel until it has been renovated? I did NOT hate this place, but the issues above definitely posed problems.

Room smelled a little when we arrived. No fan in the bathroom made the room humid. The bathroom door does not latch shut.

Location

The main reason we booked this place was for the pool since we were there for family time. The pool was down and we didn’t know till we got there that night.
