We stayed at this hotel at the end of January for a single night even though we had booked for 3 nights. We chose to check-out the very next morning of the first night. The reason for the early checkout was that we did not feel comfortable with the level of safety and cleanliness of the area. As the holiday was in celebration of our 4th wedding anniversary, we did not expect that we would be required to be vigilant at all times with regards to our safety whilst out of the hotel premises. We were told by staff at Love Lane to ensure that handbags, phones and valuables were to be kept close by to avoid theft. We were also advised that the hotel gates closed at 9pm. I have unfortunately never been on holiday and been told that the place that I was staying at would close their only entrance. This implied that the area was not safe. Apart from safety, the surrounding area is unclean and appears to be derelict. There are what appears to be mini trenches dug to direct water into drains. The water in these trenches is green and looks very unsanitary. This is a breeding ground for mosquito’s and other bugs. The street art mentioned is few and far between. This area is not as advertised. We researched using various booking sites, Malaysia tourism website and the Love Lane website. None of these mentioned the state of the area. The hotel room itself was filled throughout our stay with the smoke from mosquito coils. In fact all our bags and clothes completely reeked of this smell.

if you love staying in heritage hotel, 23 Love Lane is your prime choice. easy accessible, very near Lebuh Chulia great street food - wanton noodle, curry mee.Plus very nice Nasi Lemak for breakfast (easy version for caucasians, not very spicy)

Loved the authenticity of the hotel, the room was lovely and in a great location. Staff were very attentive and welcoming. Had a lovely stay.

The experience in staying in a UNESCO heritage building is very nice. The decorations, furnitures, etc was an experience.....a beautiful memory of my childhood. The fact that there are limited rooms, each with its unique design and without a fridge is very interesting. Make time to find out about the history of the building for added value. Service we have no complaints. But be mindful that if you staying in ground floor, you will hear squeaks from the floor boards upstairs

Love the space, the staff, and the art throughout the hotel! The library upstairs is lovely. They breakfast is personal. They take care of you here. Ask for a room upstairs- or one of the lofts.

Standing right in front of the main gate entrance of the hotel, one will instantly feel a sense of attraction towards entering into a magical time tunnel of beautiful childhood memory! Love the wonderful experience indeed!

Great hotel which feels more like a sanctuary, old colonial mansion and art exhibition in one! It's located in the middle of it all the action - I just walked everywhere. The complementary afternoon tea is an extra touch which highlights the great service. Would reccomend

My flight into Penang was delayed by more than 2 hours so I arrived at the hotel at 1:30AM to find the front doors locked. I tried calling the hotel repeatedly and got no answer. As a last resort, I banged on the gate for a couple minutes, then gave up and checked into another hotel.
