"Very disappointing experience, not 4 star"

4.0

This not a 4 star experience, very neglected, we purchased this holiday through Bluebay travel, who we have used before and had no complaints We book as we wanted a beach resort, and the pictures on the the website showed and describes things like walk along the beach, and sunbeds available on the beach. The beach is totally in usable, weeds, sea weed rubbish you cannot even walk on it and again promotional information shows lovely beaches The food, while most of the food was ok, and I mean nothing special. It does suggest 5 restaurants when in reality it is 2 as no more than 2 open at one time and menus not much different, and the fact that the restaurant is advertised as al a carte, and the chef does not know how to cook a steak. I ordered well done 3 nights and it was bloody in the middle. There is a free shuttle to a lovely beach, but you have to pay for entry to the beach and then pay for sunbeds and parasol. So this is not free. It cost us £50 for the one day we went, a full week would have cost us £350 if we had wanted to sit on the beach each day. The fact the images and descriptions suggest you can walk along the beach and sit on the beach is misleading, as there is no way you can The pools were nice, if you could find a sun bed and parasol that were not broken. It looks as though at some point this was a luxury resort, but not now, none of the sunbeds matched, no pool towels available, We were told the room was an ocean front deluxe upgrade , when in fact all rooms are ocean view, and if this was an upgrade, the door was stuck and hard to open cracked tiles in the bathroom, no bath plug. Very basic to say it was supposed to be 4 star. Again if this is the upgrade I do wonder whatever the basic room was. There is a link on the website also has a link to a video, this shows people on the clear lovely beach, When it is obvious the beach has been neglected for a very long time, images also show nice sun loungers and parasols around the pool, when they were all mis matched and some broken, hardly any parasols worked. This is not just about the beach, the whole experience was very bad. Definitely not a 4 star experience. The only positive thing to say is the view of the ocean is stunning, and the weather was lovely. Apart from that I would not recommend this resort. Misleading advertising.

The property needs better maintenance. It property is run down. The smell on arrival was disgusting due to the sargassum. The scent of the room made us sick. We asked tor lysol spray or air freshener spray...staff brought us a counter top airfreshner...that did nothing to mask the awful rotting smell of the sargassum. There were only 2 towels in the room we had to request an additional towel despite making a booking for 3 guests...thankfully we were there for 1 night since the stench was unbearable. We enquired about some recourse for the uncomfortable environment to which the response was that the seaweed was an act of nature ...Later that week ,popular beaches close to the airport got affected by the sargassum and the beaches were closed and cleaned in hours...Magdalena could have done the same but they do not care about the environment nor their guests. I will not be returning in the future.

I can say this staying at this hotel is worth maybe $500 per night and not the $1800+ I paid. The toilet ran all night, the tub leaked, the air condition unit leaked, the floors were wet. The breakfast was limited and below par. The beaches are full of garbage.

"Good staff, Wrecked Hotel."

6.0

We arrived at what seemed to be a beautifully well graphed hotel. Check in was fast, no problem there, the buffet was plentiful, tasted great and the waiters are the sweetest little things. However, We can tell these young adults have been well mistreated by this hotel. Scared to give out the names of other staffs when a guest asks, when you ask if they are paid well, they say "I cant answer that" with frowns , I cant stand a business that mistreats its staff, especially when they are trying their best. The hotel is outdated and falling apart. The gulf course needs work, the towels are old, while watching Them I can tell a few hundred people have used them. They have a playground that just sits there and looks perfectly ok, maybe needs some fixing. but according to staff its been closed for years. The rooms are small and they are very Tidy but aged with a moldy smell. The sea weed sat there for our whole stay, they made no effort to clean It, usually at other hotels they would not let it sit for so long that it created a pungent smell. If their goal was to ward off demons than this would be appropriate, but that smell will only ward off new guests, it smelled like feces. When I say this hotel is falling apart I mean it. Pieces are laying all over and constantly you see the workers trying their best to piece this hotel back together everyday. Painters and gardeners, but it doesnt look progressive. If my husband was not here for golf I would never stay. If you are very laid back like my husband and you just want to enjoy a nice scenery without care for your LIFE then I recommend this hotel. But from what I see, this hotel is unsafe. It is probably being eaten out from inside by those on top and that is why it cannot be fixed. If the ones that run this beautiful place allowed it to reach to this point, then to fix it you need to remove the old and start anew. 1 Rotten Product Will Spoil All the Goods if placed together. Needless to say this hotel can do MUCH better.

"Bad management, Lots of Potential"

4.0

This hotel was previously rated as 5 stars so me and my husband really wanted to enjoy a small stay at a cheap 5 star hotel. Or at least the quality. However, when we arrived, check-in was long, so we started exploring, The hotel gave me a dusty vibes as if I had just entered a museum. The old paintings helped to add to that effect. The restaurants are clearly old, but has the best staff in the world. NO air conditioning and no windows just 2 fans that makes too much noise. Of The 4 restaurants I saw (there may be more idk), only 2 were open. The pool deck needs a lot of work regarding pool essentials, I couldn't find an umbrella for myself on a deck that was clearly almost empty, the pool and maintainance guy had to "fix" one for me... The music was great, but activities were a bit childish, more for my kids. There should be exercises and walks added to the activities. my group was really looking forward to it as it's such a huge place. The sliding door would not open, stuck! Had me assuming The room probably hadn't been used for months or more. Our room had no blow dryer even tho they claimed every room has one, I dried my hair in anguish! everytime I got back from the pool, as I REFUSED TO MYSELF to take time from MY vacation to complain about their lack of care for their rooms or anything else. The staff is their ONLY redeeming feature. It didn't lose a star rating because of its age, it needs to lose a few more stars because of their poor management, and the way they treat their staff who is doing their best to hold up a hotel that is falling down on them (Literally). As we walked by the stairs we saw chunks of what looked like concrete they fell from the second floor, you could see the rusted metals in the opening at the bottom of the second floor. The Pools are well cleaned but their towels are not ???? (Dingy, nasty, washed out towels, I MUST express my disgust!) The trail lights are leaning and look like they are asking for help to stand UP. Definitely not a style, just lazy maintenance. Things that are simple to fix but easy to forget. As I walked the compound I saw many of this. I also Talked to many of their staff who's spirits seems crushed by this industry. I can tell they are trying their best, but see no future in it at all. OVERALL, I did enjoy my stay. The shuttle to the beach was a plus. The island tour and the bird rain forest also made me understand why people love that little island much. Conversations with the staff made me realize that a lot of them truly enjoy what they do. The Island of Tobago gets a 5/5 rating. But that hotel needs a lot of work! A LOT! ( It is unsafe )2/5 rating for YOU!

My watch was stolen from my suitcase by resort staff. The resort has no due diligence process for recovering missing/stolen items. Any attempt to follow up is met with being left on hold, being transferred between departments, being hung up on, until you’re ultimately left with no choice but to give up due to international call fees preventing you from continuing to follow up.

"Plantations Golf Course"

10.0

I visited Tobago in March for my annual seven week stay having visited this magical island every year since 2016. We hired a villa on Plantations as our base and used the islands facilities during our stay. Utilising the Plantations Golf course on many occasions, improvements made over the last few years makes this a wonderful course to play. The improvements have coincided with with the appointment of Tamara as the general manager who goes out of her way to ensure that everyone is welcome, facilitating golfers who have failed to book a tee time, book a buggy or forgotten to bring balls, tees etc. The staff support to all golfers is exceptional with green keepers exchanging conversation, local golfers sharing their experiences and making everyone’s stay as pleasant as possible. I will be returning in 2026 and look forward to a splendid holiday destination that as not been to commercialised. Neil Lowndes

"Avoid this course – poor service, unwelcoming staff, and mismanagement"

2.0

We recently played a round at Magdalena Grand Beach & Golf Resort Golf Course in Tobago and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. We arrived promptly for our 7:00 AM tee time, only to find the clubhouse closed. The security guard told us management was late. When the manager, Tamara Philip, finally arrived around 7:30 AM, her first comment was not an apology, but a complaint about how our drop-off vehicle was positioned. Not exactly a warm welcome. It took another 15 minutes before the pro shop was opened, only for her to tell us that we didn’t have a tee time booked—despite giving her the name of the staff member who took the reservation. Instead of resolving the issue, she was dismissive and offered no apology or solution. Then came a warning: if it started raining, there would be no rain check. Fine—but the issues continued. We were told we needed a driver’s permit to rent a golf cart—a requirement that was never communicated when we booked. We eventually showed a photo of a permit, which seemed to suffice, but then we were told that if we were caught with the cart on the course, they would take the keys away. The whole interaction felt confrontational and hostile. Not once did we receive an apology. In fact, it felt like we were unwelcome from the moment we arrived. This course is government-run, and sadly, it shows. The staff clearly does not care about hospitality or customer experience—and the treatment we received made it hard not to feel that foreigners aren’t particularly welcome. If you still decide to play here, be prepared for poor service, arbitrary rules, and possibly being treated like an inconvenience. And if you must, try speaking to the “dinosaur” Tamara—though don’t expect much help. Extremely disappointed. Would not recommend.

"If your thinking of going here, save yourself a lot of money and go elsewhere"

2.0

This is an honest review and feel badly let down by Blue Bay Travel. We were here on our 2nd week after spending a week in The Blue Bay Hotel 3 star in St Lucia. As others have said, this hotel is in no way a 4 star, 2 at most. The place is crumbling. Great big cracks in supporting pillers, rotting handrails and don't lean too long on a handrail as paint seems to stick to your arms even though it hasn't recently been painted. We had 2 tickets for the Kalina restaurant downstairs. Awful service waited 15 minutes for a drink, at least 45 minutes for the main course (there were only 4 tables of people in the dining room) which was disappointing to say the least was told most things off the menu. Unfortunately, the owners boast its one of the top restaurants on the island according to their description on the offer from Holiday Pirates at thr moment, forget it. One of the worst we have been to and we have travelled extensively throughout the caribbean and beyond. No hot water, no beach, no entertainment whatsoever and I mean zero. Older staff rude and obnoxious. Photos you see as advertised on any current website are not true and misleading. Place is tired and need extensive investment with someone who has deep deep pockets. ( apparently this place is up for sale). Umbrellas mostly broken, warm beer out of cans. No coffee available throughout the day unless if your eating. Coffee Cafe at front closed all time we were there. In the pub on first day, had draft beer and nice and cold, keg ran out, rest of week was warm cans. Food mediocre to say the least. 2 domestic toasters which took forever to toast, needs industrial toaster. Worst hotel I've spent on a holiday. I can't really give a positive about this place apart from the coach taking us back to airport and home. Save your money, please, please don't be fooled by the pictures they put up, spend your hard earned cash elsewhere. Like I said, the 3 star in St Lucia was by far superior to this place with regards to food, drink, service, entertainment and all round ambience. Where these good reviews come from I do not know. Will I be back? NEVER!!! Would I recommend? Certainly not. Everything about this hotel when we stayed felt like everything was to a very tight budget, basic and produced 'JUST TO GET BY' Even the tour operators are being hoodwinked by these false photos. Maybe they should actually send their employees out to check it out before they start selling them.

"AMAZING!!!!"

10.0

Remember this is a small island so go with a sense of relaxed and it’s a chilled struggling still from Covid island!!! We also come with low expectations but it blew us away!!!! What can I say we had the most Amazing time here!!!! The staff….. all of them showed us nothing but kindness, helpfulness and love!!! We were lucky never to really wait more than 10mins for a drink to come to our table and food 25-30mins for food ordered!!!!(but maybe because we were polite and polite wasn’t rushing them?) We enjoyed all the food and understand some things weren’t avalible but why would they get in expensive products to go off(I’d say hotel was only 20% capacity!!!) Staff…. We had nothing but amazing service personally, even down to when I said we wanted to try doubles (a local street food) the girl at reception I’m so sorry I forgot your name was going to bring us some couldn’t because the stall wasn’t opened so got our guild on a trip to stop for us!!!!!❤️❤️ they were amazing please people try them!!!! When a trip got cancelled we easily got a taxi booked by reception to take us to pigeon point and had the beach to ourselves and had amazing hot pies (I’m now trying to make at home) again the best thing we did having the beach to ourselves!!! We then with the help of a local got a taxi back!!!❤️ Don’t get me wrong our shower had poor pressure and was usually luke warm/ then broke on the last day lol Yes there is seaweed but it’s the Atlantic side 150tt=£11 got us a taxi to the carrib side in 15mins and amazing!!!! BUT Please ignore the bad reviews, go with a smile, respect for the workers/people, know it’s not Mexico or Antigua it’s a tiny island and you’ll get it back 10 fold!!!! Magdalena you really did make our holiday amazing and it was all the staff and gorgeous island ❤️
