Hilltop Cabins and Motel

This was our first time in this area and we didn't find a lot of choices. Thankfully, we found the Hilltop Cabins / Motel in Grand Marais. It is, in fact, on a hilltop or on a hillside, with a nice view of the bay / lake from the deck and our room (we watched the sunset through our window). The room was nice and felt like a nice "cabin" (though we were in the strip of 5 or 6 "motel" rooms). There was a game room above the garage near the lobby, which the kids liked. True "continental breakfast" with good pastries. Stayed one night, but would consider this place for a longer stay.

Very nice grounds and a beautiful location. The problem for us was that the staff cleaned the room (on a warm, wet day) with the door open. When we checked in a hour or so later, there were HUNDREDS of mosquitoes in the room. Even though we prepaid, we did not stay here. I realize that this is the UP and there are bugs, but my daughter has a bad reaction to bites, and there was no way to sleep in a room with that many mosquitoes.

Hotel and the grounds were very clean with many thoughtful and cute details. Owner was very nice & helpful. Hotel was located at the gateway of Pictured Rocks shoreline and centrally to many of the sites we wanted to see. Deck overlooked the lake and we enjoyed several beautiful sunsets.

The view was beautiful, our room needed quite a few repairs, bathroom door didn't close , outlets by bed had no covers and the bedroom lamp kept flickering because if that. The continental breakfast consisted of muffins and breads that were very stale, we were disappointed in our stay there.

Loved our stay. Hotel was clean, nicely decorated. Service was very good and view was fantastic. Would definitely stay again.

This hotel is in a village called Grand Marais which is a little more than an hours drive from the town of Munising. It is on the other end of the lakeshore across from Munising. If you want to be closer to where the cruise begins from and have access to more restaurants etc. then you should stay somewhere in Munising. We did the sunset cruise and by the time we were done, it was dark and we had to drive for more than an hour to reach this place. For the small village of Grand Marais, this motel was good and comfortable. But the room didn't have shampoo and the bathroom door would keep opening by itself. Also the bed was a little uncomfortable and a few other reviews before me had said the exact same thing about the bed in this room (Possum). However I do understand that getting a new bed in a remote village like that would be very difficult. Jeanette was the only person running the show here. She seemed to be a pleasant person but when we reached the motel late in the night for the very first time, she wasn't around. It was around 11 pm when we reached and right after reaching we had a small emergency but since Jeanette was not around, there was no one to help us. We called on the phone number that was provided but it rang for 10 mins and no one picked it up. Luckily we got over the emergency but things would be very difficult otherwise.

Wonderful location with a touch of home. Janette was super sweet.

Quiet, great view, very clean. Called them when I realized I would be much later then expected. Staff very helpful and was able to work around my schedule. Planning on returning in the fall to see the colors.

Be prepared to live out of your suitcase. No closet or dresser to put clothes. Nothing to set your suitcase on to keep off the floor. Nice hardwood floor in room but, no rug or shoe tray to set your shoes on to keep snow or wet shoes off of floor. Warning.. Kitchenette island counter top not screwed down so don't put any weight or pressure on edge or it will lift up and you beverage will spill etc. No cooktop or oven as stated in description. inspection label in the oven from gas inspection company states off as of 6/2014?? There was a single pan electric cooktop you could use. However we had brought breakfast with us to make every morning and one at a time not as good as a 4 burner stove when your making eggs, sausage and fried potatoes.

It was very nice with a small kitchen and the continental breakfast was simple but homemade. We enjoyed our stay and would stay again , if in the area.
