Private GUEST HOUSE KUMANOYASAI near Takahara

Our first night after starting the Kumano Kodo, we were delighted to walk up to this beautiful traditional home set with views of the mountain. A short walk down and back up the mountain was worth it for this house. It had all the facilities we needed and was clean and comfortable. We enjoyed a beer on the balcony from the supermarket only a 20 minute walk away. We were rested and ready to start our next day.

Shino is an amazing host — so responsive and helpful — and the home is beautiful! Her cooking is delicious and fresh and warms the soul. We couldn’t have imagined a better stay!

This was the perfect first night of our three night hike. It is such a great and cosy guesthouse that one has to oneself. The host Shino is amazing, super welcoming, helpful (she also arranged our luggage pick up during our hike) and great cook.

nothing, but something to bear mind is that the delicious breakfast and lunch box pick up is a short bus journey away. This however worked perfectly for us and our hike.

Our host was so helpful in every way & the dinner & breakfast were delicious. Bedding very comfortable too.

The house is beautiful, with lovely art, comfortable living areas and a charming pink bathroom!

Everything was great, except for the total price of the night including the meals which was a bit expensive for our budget. Location is 40 min away from the Kumano trail but that wasn’t too bothering.

The home is lovely and quiet, with use of a kitchen and laundry.

while this may be a better choice for motorists, it is an option for those who can’t find accommodations along the pilgrimage route. there were two of us but it could easily accommodate more. It is a steep hike down the mountain from the Kumano Kodo to this property, so factor another 45 minutes in both at the end of your day and the start of the next day. The directions were somewhat confusing — it is actually on the outskirts of the village and the access is along the side of a busy road without a sidewalk. Once you are there it is a lovely quiet place and Shino is an amazing host who brings delicious food from her nearby cafe. For those of us not accustomed to Japan Shino needs to leave more instructions like how to turn on the hot water via a wall switch!
