"Emergency response by staff"

2.0

I have resisted posting this but I can't any longer as the more people I tell this to are unbelievable as am I. We went on Thanksgiving vacation for 7 days as we did last year. My brother and his son went too with their trailer. When setting up our trailers once we got there my nephew called out to me to come over immediately. I did and my brother In law had collapsed while they were setting their trailer. My nephew is an EMT and instructed me to get his emergency bag from their truck and to call 911. He was turning blue. There is no cell service in this area so I rapidly drove up to the store/check in. Ran in and asked the guy behind the counter to please call 911 as my brother had collapsed and we have no cell service, you have a land line please call 911 ! He said no "go outside and use the pay phone" Really! asked him again and he said no go use the pay phone. No time to argue so ran out to my truck to get coins for the phone, as I haven't used one in 30 or 40 years. Ran to the phone and the guy from inside came out to help me. He did have 911 on his phone and was then helpful. Someone inside must have slapped him upside the head... Long story short, don't rely on these people to help, and my brother was sent to Escondido and is ok to day. My brother wouldn't be alive without the help of his son. Kurt

"Our "Gypsy Wagon" an excellent value."

10.0

We came to the area for the wildflower bloom which was fabulous. The "Gypsy Wagon" we stayed in was just what we were looking for. It had a double foam pad on a platform that was simple but quite comfortable. The wagon had an electric heater which was appreciated during the cold nights. It had an air conditioner too but we didn't need it in March. Restrooms and showers were right behind the unit. The people we met were pleasant and it was quiet at night. It was just 30 minutes from Borrego Springs.

"Great western campground and cabins in the center of Anza Borrego"

10.0

Great location in the center of Anza Borrego with beautiful mountain views. The cabins were very clean and had awesome western touches. We visited in the winter and the campground was pretty empty. The entire site is really well designed with cool communal gathering places. Nice general store with reasonable prices as well.

"If you can't get a reservation, show up anyway"

6.0

I tried for days to get a reservation at this campground. They didn't answer the phone, they didn't return my voice message, and they didn't respond to the request form I filled out on their website. We were planning to tent camp along with some friends who have an RV, so we went there anyway despite the lack of response. (I figured with Anza-Borrego's open camping policy, we could always use that as a fallback.) Well, they were very nice when we arrived, despite the earlier lack of responsiveness. And they said if they can't be reached, come anyway, because they've only turned people away once in the history of the place. We were just there for one night, so we didn't use a lot of the facilities. But they looked great, especially the nice community room. And the bathrooms were a big upgrade over our usual, the state park campground. They claim to offer free wifi, but it didn't work for us or any of the people we were with.

"You Can't Pick Your Neighbors...."

8.0

Have stayed here several times in a motorhome and there are quite a few good things about it. The campground is convenient if you like to get out in the desert as there are so many Jeep trails off of Highway S-2. The facilities here are in great shape and clean. Plenty of amenities like a store, clubhouse, pool, basketball courts, trails and good equestrian accommodations. Early morning walks may reveal jackrabbits, roadrunners, coyotes and quite a variety of birds. The staff is very friendly and efficient. There is adequate space between most sites. About half the sites don't require leveling. The cabins here vary from rustic to ones with bunkhouses and fully equipped kitchenettes. There is little to no cellular reception and the wi-fi is marginal toward the rear of the park. Now the part about the neighbors. About 600 yards behind the campground, there is a shooting range or a dwelling with a bunch of red necks who love to shoot their guns. While we were there, it sounded like they were shooting a cannon along with small arms fire. This went on for 2-3 hours. The gunfire can be unnerving, especially if you want some peace and quiet. So, overall we love the campground but the shooting range is a big detractor.
