Honmachi Juku

There are lots of good things about staying here. Value for money and cheerfulness of the staff, as well as the beauty of the location, are superior.

There are some drawbacks to keep in mind. There is not much privacy, you will constantly hit your head on wooden beams, and you will be asked to surrender your room key every time you leave. Also, the hotel is unstaffed at certain times, meaning you will find yourself locked out or in if you don't coordinate with the manager. Lastly, the thin mattress you sleep on the floor with may not be suitable for everyone.

It's a renovated 180year old home which is a great place to stay. Breakfast is good value & served by the owners. It's a beautiful building immaculately restored.

The homemade Japanese breakfasts were phenomenal and a very good value. Almost unbelievable. Each day was different, with a healthy balance of vegetables, proteins, and carbs (rice). Authentic, and served by a wonderful woman.

It is about 20 minutes of walking from the closest train station, so walking and/or taxis are needed. One-way taxi is about $5-6. Walking is fine on nice days, because it’s a castle town with views of Hikone Castle, its moats, and many old & beautiful homes along the way.

The host Natsuhara-san really went above and beyond for me, he is very kind. The cleaning ladies who come in the morning are also very kind and we did our best to communicate through the language barrier. Overall I had a great time! It's very close to Hikone Castle and in the historical town area so it's easy to see the attractions.
