Hotel San Jose

The hotel is very nice and welcoming. The staff were nice and friendly and the overall vibe of the hotel was relaxing and is located in a great part of Austin. However, I would advise anyone who is a light sleeper not to stay here because the hotel does get noisy at night from the club(s) across the street that are open until 2 am. Additionally, the room walls aren't insulated very well and you can hear people next door. Finally, the rooms don't feel very cozy and feel a bit harsh and dull, do don't expect lots of color and comfortable flooring, its all concrete.

Location and design

Hotel San José feels like a tiny village hidden inside Austin, filled with laughter, warm light, and people who actually seem happy to be there. The lush plants, intimate paths, and small but inviting pool create a relaxed atmosphere that never feels forced or overdesigned. It’s the perfect blend of old-school Austin charm and easygoing comfort, and I can’t wait to return.

Hotel San José has a wonderful vibe, but the prices have drifted into territory that feels out of reach for what used to be a simple, charming stay. It is lovely enough that I still go occasionally, but I would visit far more often if the rates were even remotely reasonable. Like much of modern life, it now seems priced for a world where everyone needs millions just to enjoy what used to be middle-class comfort.

We usually love staying at Bunkhouse properties — we frequent Hotel San José, Hotel Magdalena, and Saint Cecilia, and often stop by the San José bar for its great natural wine and cocktail selection and the beautifully designed landscape. However, our stay last weekend was surprisingly disappointing. We were given Room 12, and it genuinely felt like a dated, run-down motel room. The bathroom had a truck-stop feeling to it, and the overall space felt worn and neglected. The windows face directly into the parking lot, and throughout the night car headlights were constantly flashing into the room, making it hard to relax. It could be that this specific room is just incredibly loud and poorly located, but it made for a very uncomfortable stay. Being positioned right next to the lobby only amplified the issues. The hotel bar music was loud enough to feel like it was inside the room, and once that finally stopped, noise from the Continental Club took over. We didn’t fall asleep until around 2am because of how loud it was. For over $400 a night, this experience didn’t come close to the quality we expect from the San José. It’s disappointing, because we genuinely love these hotels — but this stay felt more like an overpriced roadside motel than the boutique experience we’ve come to expect. Would avoid Room 12 if you want a good night’s sleep and a peaceful stay.

Loved staying here! The hotel property is beautiful and has an amazing location. The staff was incredibly helpful and kind, truly nice people. Absolutely loved the vibe that was created at Hotel San Jose. The rooms were very clean and simple, but cool. Plenty of space outside to hang out. The pool size was a little misleading with the pics on the website. It is very small but nonetheless it's great to have the option to relax in the pool.

The location is unbeatable, just steps from South Congress. The robes were a fun bonus, and the on-site bar was great. We loved having access to the pool, and the 12 pm checkout was perfect. We soaked up every minute of our staycation.

Even on a Sunday in November, the courtyard patio and pool were pretty busy. Our main concern was that the room felt like it needed some attention. The windows were dirty, which didn’t help an already dark space, and the older toilet caused issues with normal use. Overall, it didn’t feel like the elevated experience you’d expect at this price point. It seems like the hotel is leaning heavily on its great location, and the rooms could benefit from updated finishes. We ended up enjoying our stay at Hotel Carpenter more than San Jose.
