Canopy By Hilton Memphis Downtown

Was a bit disappointed with the cost of drinks at the bar, 3 drinks were $100. Really liked the location and being across from the Peabody. Also, were kept awake by the loud mufflers cruising up and down Union and we were on the 3rd floor.

This was my 3rd stay in a year and will probably be my last. Though overall, I like this hotel, for the overall price and to maximum Hilton Gold status and the Amex credit, there are better options in Memphis. Pros: Great staff and customer service, in walking distance to Beale Street, and restaurants. Clean rooms. Valet service is good. Cons: 1) Parking is only valet and expensive. Keep this in mind to add to the overall cost of the hotel stay. 2) If you are using an Amex $100 credit, I would advise against staying at this hotel. The credit is only good for the restaurant and there are no other amenities to use the credit. The restaurant is not very good and it's expensive. My breakfast tasted like it came from a frozen bag and the eggs are not real. The breakfast was $45 for 2 people and it was the equivalent of a free breakfast buffet. Last year I was able to use it on valet fees and this year I was told I couldn't. 3) As a Hilton Gold member and Amex Platinum I received a free premium queen upgrade. The only difference between the regular queen and premium is that it comes with a robe and slippers. When I inquired as to why the room didn't have the robe and slippers, I was told that I had to book the room as a premium and not as a free upgrade. So, technically, it wasn't an upgrade if I didn't receive the premium upgrades with the room.

For being a 4 star hotel it was not up to standard. The bathroom was not clean, dirt and grime was in the corners of the shower pan and along the glass door. A poor job was done to fix issues like gaps between the tile, which were sloppily caulked over. I’ve stayed in 2.5 star Holiday Inns with cleaner restrooms.

Very pleased with my stay

Nice modern hotel. I liked the decent sized bathroom and the room (at the rear of the property) was quiet at night. I found breakfast choices a bit limited in the hotel and it was all al la carte, so no buffet available. The hotel seemed quiet when I was there with few people eating or drinking in the lobby/restaurant. Air-conditioning in the room was noisy, but overall a decent hotel and well located.

The Canopy is ideally located across the street from Redbird Park and the Peabody (go see the ducks). The decor is well-maintained with a 70s/Frank Lloyd Wright vibe - browns, oranges, gold. The rooms are spacious and clean and there is good storage. The reasons I didn't give a 5/5 are (1) the restaurant breakfast (you pay for) offers only full heavy breakfasts. No cereal or just a bowl of fruit or piece of toast. They were also out of bacon and orange juice for both mornings we were there. Someone forgot to do inventory before the weekend. (2) This is a Hilton problem in general - the shower head puts out a "spring shower" stream. I know that's to save water but anyone with hair has to take twice as long to wash& rinse. Also no mirror over desk so two of us were trying to share one small area to do makeup and shave. (3) This is a Memphis problem - there are drag races with very loud mufflers in the streets all night long. Not just the Canopy, our friends at the Marriott down the street had same issue. Not sure what the hotel can do about it except band with other area hotels to put pressure on the police to stop it. Throw a few tack strips down on random nights and pull some licenses. Overall, I would stay here again - clean, nice, great location.
