The Colonial Inn, an Ascend Collection Hotel

We enjoyed staying in a building with years of history behind it yet very well renovated with modern features while keeping that old historic feel and look. Every person we encountered on the staff was very nice and helpful. That went from the night desk clerk when we arrived to the others at the desk the next two days as well as the bartenders and cleaning staff. All were extremely nice and helpful. Pleasant surprise was when we arrived our room had not been cleaned. The night desk clerk (Jed) upgraded our room to a suite for the same price we had signed up for. Very spacious and luxurious. More businesses of all types should take note of this approach and always upgrade when there is a problem that affects the customer with no fault of theirs. This insured we will return one day.

TV did not get local channels. While we were there the local channels would show as having a weak signal or some other technical issue. The other channels were fine. Either larger trash cans or more of them. Hand soap had a strong fragrance. Something not so strong would be better. I understand the TEAROSE aroma being associated with a Historic hotel. A dirty laundry bag would be nice to have for taking home the used laundry.

We had the ribeye and the fillet mignon. Tasted good but significant gristle in the ribeye. Fillet was ok as well. Both steaks came with mashed potatoes which were ok and broccolini that had no flavor. Service was just acceptable. I wish I’d left a smaller tip. They seemed like they were trying to hurry us out of there. Waiter didn’t even offer us dessert. This inn itself is a neat historic building, but we weren’t impressed and probably won’t go back.

The staff was super-friendly, and the hotel is beautifully renovated while maintaining its historical charm.

They don’t have customer service and the staff are unfriendly. The food we ordered was highly processed, not warm and loaded with sugar. It seemed like a joke! Couldn’t believe a historic landmark venue would operate on that level. If that were not enough, they were grossly understaffed as well. Will not be going than ever again!

Beautiful, historic building nestled within the sweet little downtown of Hillsborough. Staff was so incredibly friendly, check in was easy, and room service was divine. Beautiful rooms and steps away from locally owned shops.

This is one of the best hotels, thanks to its excellent location. If you’re seeking a quiet neighborhood with some small shopping options, it’s a perfect choice. What truly stood out was the exceptional customer service—I had one of the best experiences thanks to an African American gentleman/ receptionist who went above and beyond. His joyful attitude and dedication to his work made a lasting impression. The only thing to keep in mind is to plan ahead for transportation, as scheduling or allowing extra time for Uber is necessary.

I can only speak to the dining....Seven of us went to the Hillsborough Inn for lunch.. All who ordered soups found they were only luke warm. The arugula salad was merely a handful of bagged arugula with a couple of pieces of apple. The salmon was overdone. My ham and cheese sandwich was just barely toasted and was so overwhelmed by mustard that I could not eat it. My broccoli cheddar soup had huge pieces of broccoli in it - not chopped or cut-up. The real kicker is that they do not do separate checks! There was no gratuity added and the items were not in order, so figuring out each person's portion, plus the tips and sales tax was a nightmare. This is just very poor customer service. The waitress was pleasant, but clearly was responsible for too many tables. I will never go back.

Here for a family event, and it’s pretty average for the cost. Bed and sheets are comfortable, and it’s nice that there are blankets instead of just comforters. The furniture is dated, and the lights are placed oddly. No breakfast. Very little counter space in the bathroom or place to put anything. Jus kind of “meh” for the price.

The room was lovely, the staff was helpful and friendly, and you can't beat the location for a visit to Hillsborough.
