Kissel Uptown Oakland, in the Unbound Collection by Hyatt

Quiet well appointed hotel in a not so great part of town. Nice clean rooms and comfortable beds with good coffee. Less than a block behind the hotel is an area that visitors should avoid unless you know what you are doing.

If you are in the city of Oakland, I cannot recommend enough the Kissel Uptown. The staff was polite and attentive, quick and cordial. The bed was the most comfortable hotel bed I’ve slept on. The room was very quiet which worked well for rest after our busy day of hiking.

Looking to use my Amex hotel credit, Oakland was one of my last stays before the end of the year (and where the qualifying hotels didn't cost an arm and a leg - and another arm). I had to fly into SFO for cost reasons, but getting to the hotel wasn't terrible even late at night. The only hangup is that the sidewalk is not necessarily friendly to roller suitcases, but obviously the hotel can't help that. It's a small walk from the 19th St Oakland BART station. The staff were very friendly and got me checked in quickly. This is another one of those hotels that seem to have been repurposed from likely an apartment building or something like that. My room was as far away from the elevators as you could get - really had to make sure you didn't forget anything when you left as it was a decent jaunt back and forth. Even the ice machine should I need it was out of the way. Not too big of a deal - I actually like being on the quiet side of the hotel. That being said, one thing these repurposed buildings do suffer a little bit of is that noise does travel into the room. Not serious enough for me personally to really care about, but for light sleepers it might be an issue depending on where you are. As for the room itself, again it's designed differently from a traditional hotel room. Does have a closet ,but not like the big utilitarian ones you might normally see. Of course it fits the design of the room and hotel in general so makes sense. The shower was really nice. Not quite the rainfall shower that I've grown to love, but good enough. The hot water was a bit finicky though so it took some adjusting to get to the right temperature in the end. Still, it was a proper hot shower. The Amex credit also included for food and drinks and such, and as such I partook in the breakfast - which I don't normally do (mostly because either I don't have time, or the breakfast looked well... sad). My eyes went right to the French toast, and when it came I was reminded why I liked pancakes and by proxy the French toast. In fact, after returning home I had a hankering for pancakes for some time afterwards. The only real hiccup was that the internet went down about halfway through my stay, and never actually got back online. it was disappointing, and if the Amex credit didn't cover the upgraded wi-fi I might have been a little more miffed about it. Overall though, it was a great stay, I'm not sure the location is convenient for many, but if you're willing to take some transit, it's a pretty good hotel. I would definitely consider staying here again in the future.

Helpful staff and the room and amenities are well accommodating for a business trip. Really appreciate the in room steamer and gym on site.

If you want a unique guest experience in a unique city, then The Kissel is for you! The design aesthetic is colorful and whimsical. The entire staff, from front desk to bartenders, were warm, personable and attentive. Clearly, the leadership team values creating a fun and memorable guest experience that is hassle free.

The room was small, but very comfortable, modern and clean. I really appreciated the extra security (security outside, cameras in the elevator and hallways, room key required for elevator use). The snacks and beverages were nice, but limited options. I did not eat at the bar or restaurant, but had catered meals by the hotel for our work meeting and they were delicious!
