Location & First Impressions
This was our first visit to Lesvos, and from the moment we landed it felt completely different to many of the more commercial Greek destinations. The airport is small and relaxed – when we arrived, ours was the only plane there.
We booked through Jet2 and the transfer to the hotel took around two hours. Halfway through, we switched from the main coach to a shared minibus with another family. Although the distance isn't huge, the second half of the journey winds through mountain roads with tight switchback bends and speed limits of around 40mph, so the transfer takes longer than you might expect.
Lesvos feels wonderfully traditional and, importantly, not yet spoiled by mass tourism. On arrival at Aeolian Village, I was initially a little underwhelmed by how remote it felt and the apparent lack of anything nearby. However, that quickly became one of the hotel's greatest strengths. It offers a genuine escape from everyday life and allows you to completely switch off.
The Room & Hotel
Our room consisted of a double bed and single bed with a rear-facing balcony. The view wasn't the prettiest, but it did overlook the mountains, which was peaceful and relaxing.
The room was cleaned every day and the entire hotel was spotlessly maintained throughout our stay. One thing that stood out was how amazing the hotel smelled everywhere – a small detail, but one that really added to the overall experience.
Food & Dining
We stayed on a half-board basis and, quite simply, the food was outstanding.
I've never experienced hotel food quite like it before. The quality, freshness and cooking of every dish is a real credit to the kitchen team. The meat dishes were consistently excellent and the profiteroles were absolutely incredible.
Breakfast was also very good. The bacon and sausage were the standard type often found abroad, so I tended to skip those and instead enjoyed the freshly made omelettes, Greek yoghurt with honey and nuts, and the fresh bread with cherry jam – a new favourite of mine.
The pool bar also serves food, and it's surprisingly good. The chicken nuggets were some of the best I've had, and portions are generous – around nine nuggets or eight fish fingers in a standard serving.
Food prices were reasonable considering the quality and portion sizes. The drinks, however, were a little disappointing. Because there isn't much nearby, you're effectively a captive audience. There is a Happy Hour at the pool bar and a "Thirsty Thirty" half-price promotion at the beach bar, but I wasn't particularly impressed by the cocktails. My mojito, for example, tasted mostly of lime juice with a single shot of spirit and no brown sugar, despite normally costing around €10.
Pool, Beach & Kids Club
The beach is lovely and the sea is crystal clear. One of our favourite moments was simply standing still in the water and watching shoals of fish gather around our feet.
The kids' club was okay, although very quiet during our stay, which meant there was no mini disco. One thing worth noting is that the hotel is heavily used by Mark Warner guests. Mark Warner operates its own activities and kids' club that Jet2 customers cannot access.
At times this felt a little disappointing. It wasn't great walking past the Mark Warner kids' club with over ten children happily playing outside, only to take our daughter to the hotel's own kids' club around the corner where there might only be one or two children present. The hotel club itself is also housed in a fairly small, dark room, which initially made us reluctant to leave her there.
That said, full credit must go to the staff running it. They were fantastic with our daughter and always found something fun and engaging for the children to do.
The Local Area
The nearby town is absolutely magical if you're looking for somewhere authentic rather than touristy. It has a relaxed atmosphere and feels like a genuine Greek community rather than a resort town.
A special mention goes to the owners of Flamingoes, who were incredibly friendly and served great food and drinks.
The town can be reached via a pleasant 15-minute walk along the road past Turtle Bridge.
One thing to be aware of is that there are nudist beaches located to both the left and right of the main beach area. They are far enough away that children won't generally see anything from the hotel beach itself, but it's worth noting if you're considering walking into town along the shoreline with younger children.
Lesvos Queer Festival
The annual Queer Festival was taking place during our stay. It was great to see such a diverse range of people visiting the area and contributing to the welcoming atmosphere.
Wildlife & Exploring
Nature lovers will really enjoy this part of Lesvos. We saw plenty of wildlife during our stay, including flamingos on the marshes during our transfer to the hotel.
The sea life around the beach is fascinating, and the surrounding mountains add to the feeling that you're somewhere genuinely special.
The reception staff were always friendly and helpful whenever we needed assistance.
Final Thoughts
What initially felt like a remote location turned out to be exactly what made this holiday so memorable. Aeolian Village Beach Resort offers a chance to completely relax, unwind and forget about the outside world for a while.
The outstanding food, beautiful natural surroundings, authentic local town and peaceful atmosphere make this feel like a hidden gem. It isn't perfect – the drinks could be better, and the split between Mark Warner and non-Mark Warner guests can occasionally feel frustrating – but these are minor criticisms in what was otherwise a wonderful holiday.
We left feeling that we'd only scratched the surface of what Lesvos has to offer and will definitely return, next time with a hire car to explore more of the island.
If you're looking for authentic Greece rather than a heavily developed tourist destination, this could be exactly the place you're looking for.
Thank you Jet2 - awesome Holiday!
