Bakan - Sainte Catherine

I booked two apartments (one for my immediate family and one for my in-laws) for a family trip to Montreal. We only chose this location because our already booked accommodation cancelled on us two weeks before our trip which left us scrambling. At first, I was surprised to see this location was available as the pictures depict a beautiful loft style space, but I soon learned pictures can be deceiving. First, the good: This accommodation is located on Rue Sainte Catherine in downtown Montreal. The apartments are within good walking distance of a lot of shops and activities. Perhaps the best feature of the apartments is the free laundry, which is available from 8am-8pm daily (if you can find an open machine). On another positive note, the beds in the apartments are very comfortable. My children, elderly in-laws, and I had no problems with comfort. I often experience beds that are too firm and hurt my hips while traveling. The beds here reminded me of my own bed at home as it cradled my hips and allowed my spine to align perfectly. The only other positive is that the staff were easy to access via text. However, they don't actually follow through. I asked for the toilet paper holder and towel rack to be replaced during our stay and they never were.

The apartments are filthy and neglected. Upon check in it was obvious that the prior tenant smoked in the apartment. The couch stunk of cigarette smoke and the air was stale. It was hard to breathe. Even worse, I found a literal cigarette in the floor of the apartment my immediate family was provided (in pics). Beyond the cigarettes, lots of spaces were left very dirty for us. Dust bunnies made a metropolis under the beds in the apartments I booked. It was clear the staff had never vacuumed under the bed. There were also bits of food left on a cookie sheet inside the oven. Bathrooms faucets and tub drains were loaded with pink gunk and/or broken. Lights were coated in thick layers of dust. The area rugs are matted with dirt and hair. The deep tub you in the pics? You can't use it. Our two bed/two bath apt with two tubs had only one tub plug which was broken. I had to ask for a new plug and for some reason was only given one (which was clearly USED and unclean) even though we had two tubs. There are many construction projects left unfinished. There was a human-sized hole in the ceiling in the closet of one bedroom leading up to the HVAC that scared my kids. Walls aren't even painted, just skim-coated. Our living room shade was broken. The toilet paper holder and towel rack were hanging off the walls in our bathroom. They clearly tried to flip the building for guests ASAP and cut corners. Light and noise will disturb your sleep if your room faces the street. However, a bedroom that doesn't face the street may not have windows at all as was the case with my children's bedroom. Our bedroom facing the street had sheer window treatments and roller shades which let a lot of light in. The sheers in our bedroom were filthy with stains in weird places (not the bottom). Although free, it can be difficult to do your laundry because staff use the facility. Their laundry is left in the machines overnight or for hours.

Excellent property, good size and has everything you need. Perfect location if you want to be right downtown. Very close to the Bell Centre - perfect for going to events at that venue. Host was responsive and respectful.
