"Wonderful use of a portion of the very interesting and historic complex of buildings - highly recommended"

10.0

Great location and atmosphere right within the stunning stone-built gothic-style historic buildings of the former university site. Wonderful that accommodation is available on the site adding to the overall eclectic mix of uses within the restored buildings. The hotel has a range of rooms (and tariffs) and draws wonderfully in its decor and amenities in its portion of a very attractive and interesting complex with great shops, cafes, galleries, cinema and more. As well, the hotel is adjacent to the botanic gardens and very close to the city art gallery as particular places of interest. It is also only a short walk across the Avon River to the large range of eateries etc which are in that vibrant part of the city. Highly recommended.

"Warm hospitality in a beautiful boutique hotel"

10.0

Had a lovely stay at The Observatory Hotel. From the moment I checked in, the staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating—especially the gentleman who handled both check-in and check-out with such professionalism and kindness. I had requested for the king bed to be split into two singles, and the team sorted it out without any fuss. The hotel itself is stylish and peaceful, with a unique charm that sets it apart from the usual chain experience. Would happily stay again.

A beautiful hotel in a great location. A great coffee shop right in the former university complex, art, music, and across from the botanical gardens.

"Not Your Usual Hotel – But an Interesting, Artsy Stay"

8.0

We stayed three nights at The Observatory in Christchurch — a stay that started with curiosity and ended with a bit of appreciation for its quirkiness. We checked in late at night and immediately sensed that this wasn’t your standard hotel experience. Housed in what used to be the University of Canterbury’s zoology department — vacated after the earthquake — the building still carries that academic charm (and slight eeriness at night). The main entrance was locked for security, and we had to ring the bell. A single staff member welcomed us in and checked us in quietly — the whole vibe at midnight felt more like sneaking into an old university than arriving at a hotel. Rooms are on the smaller side — I joked more than once with reception about upgrading us to the “Head of Department” suite, but sadly, no upgrades came our way! That said, the rooms were clean and cozy, and the common lounge area nearby had comfy seating, a coffee machine, and work desks — a thoughtful touch. The location is great, close to the beautiful Botanic Gardens and on the quieter side of the city. In the morning, the place felt more alive. We found a restaurant, an art gallery, and even some parts of the university still operating from within the building. The exterior has so much character — a mix of old academic architecture and creative reuse. It did take us a day to adjust to the vibe. If you’re looking for traditional hotel services, this might feel a little too alternative. But if you’re someone who enjoys artsy, boutique-style stays with history and charm, this is a very interesting option. Overall, it’s a clean, well-located stopover with a unique story — just be ready for something different, and you might actually enjoy it.

"Wonderful historical renovation and location. "

8.0

Wonderful refurbished historical property. Nice unexpected extra touch of a chocolate Easter egg to celebrate the holiday. Only “complaint” would be the closet and storage space of the rooms, but to be fair understandable given the historic building limitations. Check out (10:00 am) could also be a bit more generous. And $30+ per day for parking seemed steep- but I understand parking in Christchurch is expensive. Location is great!

This is an 1800s University converted to a hotel so has a history to it. Settings are very artistic. Room was nice and spacious. Beautiful art area outside.
