Stayed for 3 nights. Really liked the hotel. Ideally situated, rooms nice and elegant, beds very comfortable, good pillows, great bathroom. Good coffee and tea facilities in the room, as well as in the library by reception. Breakfast on the 3rd floor is cute. Self service but in a quaint attic style room. Quirky type of hotel but classy. Staff are very good and helpful.
Beware of rooms 102 and 103 - overlooking the dumpsters with garbage being dropped off and collected at all hours. Pompous front desk clerk and unwelcoming environment. After traveling throughout the South Island and staying in some truly fabulous hotels, The Observatory Hotel was disappointing. We won’t be returning to this pretentious overpriced hotel.
Beautiful building close to the centre of Christchurch. Everything in walking distance. Nicely appointed room, only downside for us was the room and bathroom were set up for people with disabilities so everything was low level.
Really enjoyed the hotel and surrounding areas. A bit of constructive feedback: Check in process was a bit clumsy and the breakfast area was not reflective of a top hotel.
Wonderful hotel, loads of hostory and now part of the Arts Centre. Convenient location, Botanic Gardens just across the street and only a few minutes walk into town. Romms are very nice and immaculately clean. Breakfast is buffet continental and just fine for me. Highly recommended.

Excellent location in the former university now an Arts precinct following excellent renovations after the earthquake. We are going back tomorrow as it was so enjoyable. Wonderful staff. The room was modern, clean and comfortable. We highly recommend this hotel.
We had to book a last-minute reservation at a hotel in Christchurch due to airline issues and chose The Observatory. We ended up being so glad we had the airline mishap, because of this lovely hotel. The staff was so welcoming and went above and beyond themselves to be helpful. The atmosphere was magical, like being in a castle. Our room was beautiful, and the shower was amazing. It was outstanding to see all of the original art on the walls as well as experience the extraordinary exhibit upstairs. Loved being in the middle of great shopping and right next to the botanical gardens. This is a 5 star local.
