The Oak & Anchor Hotel

The room was lovely,we were very disappointed to not get breakfast on site, despite this being advertised on the website. We were directed to Borough chambers with a voucher and effectively had a premade breakfast pannini. Not the experience we were looking for at all.

The aesthetic of the place is excellent. It is quiet. The breakfast that we purchased as an option with our stay was good.

This is a place that looks good but functions poorly and isn't comfortable. We arrived at 8:00pm after a long trip on the road. When we arrived, it wasn't clear where to check in. It turns out, you have to check in at the bar of the restaurant that is attached to the hotel rooms. Though it was only 8:00pm, food service at the restaurant had ceased. So, we weren't able to eat at the restaurant. And, Port Fairy has few options for dining after 8:00pm. The hotel and room looked beautiful but that's where the fascination ends. Take the bath towels, for example. Large towels that look great, but not comfortable to use--rough on the skin, not comfortable at all. Another example, the body wash that is furnished for your use--no lather whatsoever, none. The robes that are provided: again, not comfortable. Look good, but no comfort. And, what's with the bathroom that is open to the rest of the room? The bathroom was beautifully appointed, but you're telling me you're supposed to be on the toilet without any privacy from your loved-one? No thanks. The only thing about our stay that was satisfying was the breakfast at a place down the street which I think is owned by the hotel owners. It's a nice place to sit outside and enjoy your meal. But, here again, nothing was smooth about the process. You are given a card as a voucher for your food, but no one tells you any details about the card or the process. Is there an amount limit on the card? Are there some items which are excluded? When do you present the voucher at the counter? And, when we presented the vouchers, the attendant at the counter didn't know how to handle it as payment. A manager had to be called over as if this was something that never happened. This one-night stay was our "extravagance" lodging expense for our 2-week trip to Australia. What a waste. It was our most disappointing experience on the trip by far.
