"Not a cave hotel. Poor service and not worthy of 5-star that it claims"

2.0

I am writing this comprehensive review to make sure my fellow travellers are fully aware of the pros and cons of this hotel and not fall into the trap that I fell into. Please don’t go by the high ratings on various sites, as I realised that these ratings can be bought easily. This is definitely not a 5-star hotel and not a real cave hotel. 1. Not a cave hotel: Firstly, the use of the word ‘cave’ in their name is to mislead you into believing that it is a cave hotel, which it is not. It’s a small boutique hotel with 10 rooms. The 3 rooms on the ground floor are big and have been made to look like a cave room, but no such effort was spent on the rooms on the 2nd floor, which are of okay size (much smaller than rooms on the ground floor) and like standard hotel rooms. (To qualify, I only saw some rooms on each of these floors and got this info from the receptionist.) 2. No lifts: There are no lifts, so if you have knee issues, please don’t choose this hotel. Breakfast is on the top floor. 3. Unhelpful staff: They only run the hotel with a few staff, so don’t expect hotel-like service. I was told the service is available only from 9 to 5 p.m. No one will help you with your luggage, so expect to carry it to your room even if it’s on the higher floor. When we arrived at the hotel, a rude gentleman (I think his name was Berat) at the reception told us that there is no bell boy and he can’t carry our luggage. We even had an emergency situation at the hotel, and when we were looking to find out where the nearest hospital is and how to get there, I had to go to the reception of the hotel next door to get help as there was no staff at Kayra to help. 4. Rude receptionist: Don’t expect 5-star hotel-like good hospitality with a smile. The 2 people manning the reception are extremely rude. In fact, the lady (I think her name was Fatima) is the most rude hotel staff I have ever come across. When I had some questions about my room, Fatima even raised her voice at me and answered in a tone that I have never faced in any hotels worldwide. 5. Noisy rooms: Do not expect much privacy in your rooms as they are not soundproof. You can hear people walking and talking next door or outside your door. From inside my room, even when all doors and windows were closed, I could hear clearly people walking up the stairs, dogs barking outside at night, vehicles moving on the road, as well as morning prayer calls from the nearby mosque. 6. Unimpressive breakfast: Breakfast has limited variety. There is a nice cook there who can make omelettes, French toast, or scrambled eggs for you, but you can have only one egg option and only allowed to have it once. There isn’t much variety for vegetarians, so please consider this carefully. 7. No checkout flexibility: Do not expect flexibility for late check-out. Even when they have a 3-hour gap between check-out and check-in, they didn’t allow me a minute extra from 11 a.m. 8. Bring your own toiletries: The quality of the toiletries provided by them is quite poor, so it is advisable to bring your own toiletries. The cotton bud was so bad that we ended up in the hospital emergency after cotton got stuck in my daughter’s ear. While not all is bad, these 3 are the only positives that I observed: 1. Good location: The location is decent as it is walking distance from good restaurants and some shops. 2. Nice bar: There is a nice bar on the top floor where they have a real fireplace. It’s worth chilling at. The staff there is nice. 3. Big bathroom: Bathroom size is big, and water flow is good. Overall, I had a disappointing 3-night stay at this hotel as I had gone there with high expectations considering the high ratings on various sites and having been misled by their name and photos to believe that they are a cave hotel. Please choose wisely.

"Lovely stay! Loved it and would definitely recommend and come back."

10.0

I am way overdue on this review, but better late than never. I visited Cappadocia with my family (husband, kids and parents) in May 2024 and stayed at Kayra Cave Suites. I would start with stating that the hotel is beautiful and picturesque. Its a small establishment, only about 10-12 rooms so they fill up fast. It felt like our own private property as it wasnt very crowded like the other establishments around us. The location was great, walking distance from downtown and the Goreme bus stop, restaurants etc. We stayed in one of the original caves that have been converted into a suite and it was beautiful with 2 rooms, a modern bath and jacuzzi. The small garden in the courtyard was very welcoming and they had breakfast served on the terrace everyday. Coming to the staff. As i mentioned it was a small establishment, but the staff were ever so friendly, helpful and went above and beyond to give personalised attention to the guests. From Fatima and Beirat at the front desk to the kitchen staff, they were all really sweet and helpful. I had been chatting with Fatima via whatsaap for about 2 months prior to our trip (since we booked the place) and she was instrumental in helping me book all the tours beforehand so that when we got there we were all set. She answered all my queries regarding age requirements for the hot air balloon, which was a better tour (green tour vs red tour), if we wanted to do ATVS, horseriding etc. She helped with bookings and pricing for all of the above and made it very streamlined making sure we were picked up and dropped at the hotel at the decided times. When we got there we did have one hiccup about the ATV as the minimum age requirement of 10 years meant my son couldnt go, but she immediately offered a solution to go on a jeep safari instead and not waste our evening. She was very concerned about my son being able to do horse riding in a group due to recent rains and him not having his own horse keeper in a group, and on her recommendation we did the private tour so my son had his own horse and horse keeper, which in retrospect was the best thing to do. Besides all this, she was a very friendly and sweet person. Even when i was getting a little flustered with the changes she kept calm and helped me find the best activities to do. Beirat, was another person at the front desk who was very helpful and went above an beyond. I gave him a load of laundry late in the evening and he made sure it was done and returned to us before our 3 am pick up for the hot air balloon, even if that meant they were finishing our laundry until midnight. The day we checked out, they let us keep our luggage there all day while we were out and in the eve we just lounged in their office, freshened up until it was time to leave for our bus. It was raining when we had to leave and Beirat offered to take us and our bags in the car and drop us to the bus stop. That was very considerate of him. The kitchen staff were also very sweet. Besides the buffet that they prepared, they kept checking in to see if there was anything special we wanted for ourselves or the kids. We had a language barrier as they didnt speak much English but they used Google translate to ask us questions and understand our answers. We loved their coffee and she was sweet enough to give my mother in law a bag of the beans so that we could remember her by. All in all we had a lovely stay and a memorable experience. Would definitely come back here if we visit Cappadocia again and absolutely recommend it.

"False advertising as to the roof of the hotel."

Rude staff, misleading pictures, false advertising that they have a rooftop with floor spread for pictures with hot air balloon. Photos shows the real rooftop.
