"Cozy, classy, clean, and thoughtful"

10.0

On a whim stayed at the Thaxter for an overnight stay in Portsmouth before flying out of Boston in the morning. Visited with my mother. We booked direct over the website very smoothly and received our entry codes as we would be arriving after front desk was closed. The beds and pillows were so soft, everything was clean and updated, and the bathroom floor was heated. The rooms are a *little* small if you are expecting a regular hotel stay, but if you are accustomed to boutiques the room size was just right for 1 -2 people (standard Queen, single bed). They have free snacks, local tea, and a Nespresso machine in the lobby 24/7 which was great for us because we had to leave very early in the morning. They also have free stashes of most any products you may have left at home - if you love the products in the room there's even an option to purchase those (I know that trend is becoming more popular but it's nice to see!) Didn't eat at the in-house restaurant but it smelled absolutely delicious, especially if you enjoy Japanese food. There's an elevator you can use to get to your room, although on the second floor there is a step-up to get to some of the rooms if you are travelling with someone with mobility challenges. Michaela (manager and actively onsite!) worked with us to ensure we had an easy transition to our check-in and check-out. The only heads-up I would give visitors is that this is a boutique hotel in Portsmouth - parking is going to be a challenge during peak. We were able to park in a lot relatively nearby and pay only $1 plus change for our entire stay, but that's only because it was midweek and we parked within 40 minutes of the metered parking ending for the night and left before it began the next day. Staff will definitely help you find parking though - we just are locals so we had ideas of where to go ahead of time.

"Great boutique hotel experience"

10.0

We totally enjoyed our one night stay at Hotel Thaxter. The staff were all very accommodating and welcoming, the room was comfortable and spotless, the bathroom had a heated floor, and the location was perfect for walking around town (within minutes of everything). I recommend using the parking service just for the convenience of not having to park and walk from one of the local lots - especially in winter. Unfortunately the in-hotel Japanese restaurant was not open (on New Year’s Day), so I can’t comment there.

"It was lovely."

8.0

I loved the special touches that seemed like a little extra care was put into the room like the white noise machine and the lighted magnifying mirror in the bathroom. I also loved being able to control the temperature- the directions were easy to follow.

The fan / heater made a repetitive noise that drove me ABSOLUTELY bonkers while I was trying to sleep. I had to wear earplugs. Also, the directions for the TV need to be updated. I was not able to figure out how to watch anything, and when I did finally find a menu it was in Spanish, so that didn’t help.

"Lovely stay"

10.0

Stayed here for the first time! This place is so charming! We came to Portsmouth for our friends wedding. And this hotel was across the street from the venue. So happy to have found this cute like boutique hotel. I wish we had more time to stay in the area. The room was the prefect size for what we needed. Yes small but we were only there for two nights. The bed was so so so comfortable! However !! The edge of the bed is a little dangerous my husband and I kept hitting our shins on the corners. So be ware. And the heated tile in the bathroom came in clutch! Loved that we could just text the hotel and front desk for anything. We parked our car with them which they valeted for us. We could just text them when we needed the car. The little tea coffee station was great. But the coffee worked half the time for me. The capsules didn’t get captured correctly in the nesspresso machine. Having tea as an option was prefect. And they had a variety of milks for your hot beverages. And they had oatmeal that you could have in the morning. And oj They also have a water dispenser which I used to refill the glass bottle provided in our room. I hope to stay here again. The room was quiet. And we loved that we didn’t have a hassle checking in. We got in late Friday night and it was so convent to type the key code for the front main door and for our room. Drop the bags off. And then we went to the goat for some drinks

"Bad customer service"

4.0

Arrived at the hotel at 10.15pm to find the front door locked. Waited in the rain for other guests to let me in. No one on reception, as they leave at 10pm. Used hotel reception phone to ask how to check in. They informed me that they couldn’t text me with the door code because I booked with a third party. This should not be a guest problem, this is a hotel check in problem. I was then told I had to find a public parking lot, dragging my cases in the pouring rain. None of the phone charger outlets built into the bedside tables worked, only finding out when my phone was dead the next morning. Then I discovered there is no iron or ironing board. I do not recommend this hotel for work travel. I travel every week with work, this kind of hassle and bad customer service is unacceptable. Very disappointing. That said, the hotel decor is beautiful, the location to town is great. If you are arriving before 10pm and book direct then lucky you. But a guest unable to check in after a long flight, with no where to park or anyone to instruct me where to park is poor. You guys need to find a better way to communicate to customers who don’t book directly.
