De Saram House by Geoffrey Bawa

We stayed a night in order to get a feel of this beautiful villa and admire its architecture, old flower and fruit trees, antique furniture and paintings, enjoy the renovations by Geoffrey Bawa and learn more about him and the owners of the house. We were welcomed by the very friendly and knowledgeable Tharaka who also showed us around the villa and made us feel at home. If you need an Uber, set the location at the Singer Ward Place - it’s just next door. We had the Deluxe King which was spacious and had an interesting bathroom with a partially open shower - which unfortunately also exposed us to smells and sounds from the surroundings, not to forget a few very loud mosquitoes at dawn when someone forgot to close the bathroom door properly in the middle of the night. The airy design of the room with mezzanine also brought light to us at sunrise. It is definitely worth a short stay as the place is a visual gem, but may not be the most comfortable for a longer stay.

It's just so beautiful and tucked away in the middle of Colombo. When we arrived we let out a breath we didn't know we were holding. It was like walking into a cool, quiet oasis. The staff were lovely and gave a wonderful tour of the space and answered our questions. The location is 10/10 easy to get a tuk tuk or walk to cafes around the corner. Our favourite place that we stayed in Sri Lanka, we feel so lucky that we stayed here. .

It felt really personal and we were very well looked after by Anthony. We felt like we were staying at a friends house. We enjoyed his informative tour and he also gave us great tips for dinner and organised a tuk tuk for us. For Geoffrey Bawa fans this is a must.

The air conditioner was a bit noisy.

The towels need an upgrade

Private house, architect designed 60 yrs ago, still stylish but could do with some upgrading. Overall still lovely. Some bathrooms/ showers open to the air. Our actual shower was covered but the side areas were open and we had a number of cockroach like beetles drop in because there was torrential rain outside, Bathroom not great but adequate. Bedroom very comfortable and spacious. Staff were very obliging as they had to stay up all hours to let people in. Breakfast very good. No evening meal available. No decent dining options close by - 2 of us ate at a local Jetwings hotel which was dreadful. Ask to have a look round the rest of the house, esp the library

No evening meal option for the tired traveller. Bathrooms could be upgraded.
